Abstract

When compared to more digitized western countries, Italy seems to have suffered a delay of ten years, in both the use of ICTs by the elderly and the study of the relation between elderly people, ICTs and ageing. Considering this time lapse, it is now urgent that we question the factors that influence the adoption of ICTs by the elderly and whether ICTs can provide cultural and relational resources that could improve the quality of life of elderly in terms of health and social life. This article describes the main findings of a survey carried out as part of a larger national research project focused on active ageing, which involved 900 Italian people aged between 65 and 74 years of age. The research investigate socio-demographic characteristics of young elderly Italian Internet users and factors related to their use of ICTs. Results have shown that there is a strong digital divide between young elderly Italians, which is primarly influenced –in terms of classical dynamics– by differences in economic, social and cultural capital. With regard to the theme of active ageing, if it is true that highly digitalized young elders are generally characterized by good health, at the present stage of this research it is not possible to indicate whether the adoption of ICTs guarantees social inclusion and participation.

Abstract

One of the challenges of the present century is to achieve adolescents and young adults’ complete development taking as a basis healthy behaviours and a culture of selfcare. On this basis in Toluca, a town in the State of Mexico, an interdisciplinary group has started an action programme dedicated to produce communicative and educational strategies to improve face-to-face and media interactions in order to promote a healthy behaviour in this group of population.

Abstract

The significant shortcomings detected in the nutrition of students in the district of Huánuco (Peru), together with the television advertising observed for products of dubious nutritional value, led us to design and conduct a research project intended to analyse the relationship between the two: The influence of television commercials on the consumption of food products advertised in 2010, which is summarised in this article. In the study we carried out a correlative study of a sample of 120 pupils at different educational establishments. They answered questionnaires, were interviewed and underwent physical examination. We also analysed the food commercials broadcast by television channels and the nutritional value of the products. Chi-square inferential analysis was used. The research showed that the pupils’ health has been adversely affected, with a serious incidence of tooth decay, a problem attributed to the consumption of certain foodstuffs. The study detected a positive relationship, which was highly significant statistically, between attachment to television advertisements and the consumption by the pupils of advertised foods which are rich in sodium, calcium, sugar and calories. Also demonstrated was the interdependence between exposure to television advertising and the consumption of foods with a high fat content, which should be monitored and controlled by government officials.

On June 14 of this year, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Carissa F. Etienne met with the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela with the objective of seeking "joint strategies to preserve the health of the Venezuelans ". The following week, at the 162nd session of the PAHO Executive Committee held in the city of Washington DC (USA), a report was released on the health situation in Venezuela, where updated figures on the transmission of diseases such as malaria are presented. measles, tuberculosis, diphtheria and AIDS. The document mentions the "significant increase" of malaria in Venezuela since 2015, when there were 136,000 cases which increased to 406,000 in 2017. The report indicates that this increase is associated with the migration of infected people in the mining areas of the country. The following essay is a discussion about the possibility of conceptualizing health from disability; to do a review on current notions of health and disability was performed. The concept of health has gone through a continuous process of signification which reached its turning point in 1948, the definition adopted by the World Health Organization. Currently there is no single definition about the aspirations of the standard of living that people aspire to achieve, therefore, any new definition of health must be organic, systemic, dynamic and positive. More than sixty years of the definition of health, the reality is that there are problems related to health conditions such as disability that have been measuring invariably from the biomedical model, in that sense, it seems that it is impossible to understand the disability beyond the eternal disease. Following the adoption in 2001 of the International Classification of Functioning, health and disability, opened new vistas in the field, the redirection of vision disability on expectations placed on the functioning of people and the multidirectional interactions that arise between people and context in which it operates autonomously. To do this, a conceptualization of health, which transcends the realm of the purely corporeal involving factors such representations and socio-environmental relationships are raised

El termino envejecimiento activo es relativamente novedoso y muy poco conocido a pesar de que en los últimos tiempos se ha hablado mucho de esto. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo revisar la literatura frente a la atención en salud del adulto mayor. El método que se utilizó fue una revisión narrativa a través de una exploración de artículos científicos en las bases de datos: Science direct, Pubmed y Scielo. En los resultados se encontró que en varios artículos los adultos mayores no  se encontraban satisfechos con la atención que recibían en salud. Como conclusiones según lo referido por las personas mayores, hay una brecha grande entre lo que se dice en las políticas públicas de envejecimiento y lo que realmente se está haciendo en la prestación de servicios. En cuanto a la percepción que tienen los adultos mayores de su salud en Antioquia, hay un porcentaje muy alto que cree que la atención en salud no es la adecuada.

 

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relation between commuting time and health in the United Kingdom. I focus on four different types of health outcomes: subjective health measures, objective health measures, health behavior, and health care utilization. Fixed effect models are estimated with British Household Panel Survey data. I find that whereas objective health and health behavior are barely affected by commuting time, subjective health measures are clearly lower for people who commute longer. A longer commuting time is, moreover, related to more visits to the general practitioner. Effects turn out to be more pronounced for women and for commuters driving a car. For women, commuting time is also negatively related to regular exercise and positively to calling in sick.
