Abstract

The competence of fresh graduates of architecture has been continuously criticized by the industry for inadequate knowledge. This is often blamed on the poor standard of education evidenced by poor performances in professional and degree/diploma examinations conducted by various schools of architecture in the country. Although, factors responsible for the scenario are well documented in the literature, most of these works are based on testimonial and circumstantial evidences relating to management of architectural education only. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between entry qualifications and the performance of architecture students in Nigerian Polytechnics with a view to determining the relevance of current admission policy to architectural education in Nigeria. Data were obtained from official records in the Department of Architecture in four randomly selected polytechnics in the southwestern part of Nigeria. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r ) was used to test the hypotheses. Findings reveal weak relationship between the two variables (physics and mathematics). This is contrary to the expectations of most scholars and policy makers who opine that students' proficiency in these subjects would enhance their performance at higher levels. The paper traces the contradiction to the poor handling of public examinations and misconception of architecture as being pure science. It holds that if these requirements are still relied upon for the admission of students into schools of architecture, wrong candidates would continue to gain entry into the profession. The paper concludes by recommending certain measures that are capable of reversing the trend.

Although the comic has been with us much longer than other arts considered as such without prejudice, there are currently no appropriate search tools that allow us to study this publication genre, so there is a considerable information vacuum in this respect. We briefly discuss the reasons that led to this neglect, and how to end this vicious circle that increasingly isolates the comic from the other arts.

The opera industry wants to renew its audience and has undertaken several strategies based on digitalization and audiovisual broadcasting to achieve it. In order to attract and create a stronger bond with new audiences, it is exploring different ways to update its information policy and modernize its image. By means of Internet, it has managed to get the opera show offstage, bringing it closer to the daily lives of its spectators thanks to video on demand (VOD) and to live streaming broadcastings. It has made the most of mobile devices to enhance their shareable presence, imitating the audiovisual commercial trends to arouse enthusiasm among its viewers and creating social networks to offer the audience a referential background. Finally, the opera industry looks upon its current state and its social integration as a means of regaining its relevance.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to assess the current state of citizen science projects and reveal the role of volunteers in the research process. This is achieved by performing a literature review and content analysis of three international and one state-owned citizen science platforms (Wikipedia, SciStarter, CitSci and Precipita) that contain more than 800 research projects. Projects have been analyzed according to four categories: the academic disciplines, the way the project is designed, the phases of the research in which volunteers participate, and the tasks they perform. The results show that projects in the arts, humanities, and social sciences disciplines are almost non-existent. In addition, in the field of natural and physical sciences, projects are fostered with a top-down approach and volunteers participate primarily in the data collection phase in order to obtain a large volume of data, thereby receiving more financing from the European Union.

Abstract

Audiovisual language keeps on improving. Images reign, and represent us. Furthermore, the technological development already allows global interactive communication. In this context, educating the sight and the audiovisual writing comes to be the key. “Emotions x Minute” is a workshop for audiovisual communication which is presented as a game and starts from the wish of expressing. It is based on two ideas: the personal experience and learning by practicing. Once finished, the participants declare two important things: first, they now watch television in a different way, and second, they finish keeping something in their hands, their minute.
