Abstract

Els objectius d’aquesta recerca es visualitzar l’evolució de la protecció de la propietat industrial catalana. Un dels àmbits que s’utilitzen quan s’avalua el grau d’innovació d’un territori es el relacionat amb les patents. Un tema en el qual històricament Catalunya havia estat i és capdavantera dins el Estat Espanyol però que en els darrers anys ha patit un rellevant davallada.

Es pretén poder donar resposta a qüestions com:

Quins son els àmbits tecnològics en que es patenta?

Com evolucionen les sol·licituds i registres de patents per tipologia de sol·licitants?

Com evolucionen les sol·licituds de patents per sector o àmbit tecnològic?

Hi ha tendències emergents?

Són les estadístiques de patents que és donen, fiables per establir el grau d’innovació a Catalunya?

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of emerging technological paths in the automotive industry. Worldwide patent data from the years 1990-2010 was collected and utilised to define the technological life cycles of the electric and fuel cell vehicle technologies. The novelty of our study is practicing the patent analysis approach using text mining techniques to collect patents according to their concepts in the automotive industry. The patent analysis results are compared to existing literature and expert opinion studies in alternative fuel vehicles field. The findings suggest that the development of electric vehicles will be quicker with a higher R&D share, compared to hydrogen vehicles. By gathering data and insights, the paper also offers general views on future automotive technology trajectories.

Abstract

The studies and analysis of Spanish scientific activity usually are more focused on contributions in journals with impact factor than on patents as a relevant indicator of the scientific work. This reality contrasts with the trends of the specialized literature, which show patents to be one of the most important parameters to measure scientific productivity. Therefore, we conducted a case study on the patents registered by Spanish Universities in 2008, using as our source the European Patents Fulltext database. Analysis of the distribution of patents by university in this specific period of time revealed a certain correlation with other commonly used indicators. This finding can be a basis for suggesting that patents can and should be considered when conducting such studies.

Abstract

Given the importance of innovation and technology development in a country’s economy, there has been an increasing need for selecting indicators to measure the degree of innovation of its companies. The indicators related to patents offer an excellent measure of this capability and can be used as an important source of information by innovative organizations, although the studies assessing this utility are scarce. This study, conducted throughout 2007, proposes a technology watch oriented analysis of the level of use of patent databases from more than 500 Spanish companies that have issued at least one patent in the period 1988-1998, followed by discussion of the study results. Abstract

Law and Information are two concepts that need each other, although the complexity of their relationship is not always fully understood. We propose an overview of the main areas where this relationship is more intimate and fundamental. To make this overview more comprehensive we will focus on the three functions that Law can exercise over Information: hide, preserve and share. All topics discussed are highly related and the discussion of one has to take into account the other. The good news is that Law has been responding to the needs of the society due to the challenges posed by technological and social changes for millenia and it has the tools to do it again. For this, legal practitioners need the support of information professionals to guide them through all the new phenomena arising from digital information.

Abstract

This research examines the relationship between technological distance (DT)and four indicators of the value of innovations or new knowledge - relative position of the patent (RPP), revealed technological advantage (RTA), Herfindahl-Hirschman Patent Index (HHI) and patent cites (PC), in inter-organizational alliances of the biotechnology sector. The research was developed using the multiple correspondence analysis. The results confirm that the technological distance of the partners (DT) of the alliance is not related to the patent cites (PC) indicator. On the other hand, it was established that there is a relationship of the DT with the RTA, RPP and the HHI; however, it was observed that the DT with the RPP have a strong linear relationship, while the relationship of DT with RTA and HHI, it seems to show an inverted U configuration. In this way, statistically it is demonstrated that the technological distance, measured in terms of the difference of the knowledge bases between the organizations that make up the alliance, is a factor that is associated in a significant way to the value of innovation.
