Abstract

The working hypothesis of this article is that many of the root causes of AIDS are intrinsically tied to the processes of globalisation. To develop efficient responses to AIDS requires more than conveying a clear message about sexual behaviour. It will often require broader strategies to empower the audiences to handle difficult conditions of everyday life. By drawing on post-colonial theory on the interrelation between media and migration, modernity and globalisation, this text seeks to re-assess the challenge of AIDS communication and prevention, suggesting a fundamental rethinking of current practice where the impacts of economic and cultural globalisation are taken into consideration.

Abstract

This paper reviews the current state of the impact of entertainment-education contributions for AIDS prevention. Traditional information campaigns are being replaced by interventions based on narrative formats which merge entertainment with an educational content. The success of such interventions depends on the ability of the narrative formats to stimulate parasocial interaction and emotional involvement. It is also stated that one of the key factors to success is to promote discussion.

21st century science has recruited amateurs and aficionados as a workforce to undertake large projects. Citizen science shows a large variety of models that can produce knowledge. Citizen science supposedly represents a democratic shift and as a result experts and expertise have been questioned. However, vulnerable and/or concerned communities may be a group, or “subtype”, that can be represented within citizen science. To analyze that subtype we must take into account the risk of exclusion and the notion of concerned community. ACT UP’s AIDS campaign is a good example of how to achieve changes on both politics and knowledge; electro-sensitivity is another case of success in the era of the internet. Both movements have deeply influenced online activism related to AIDS and electro-sensitivity. Nevertheless, a cautious approach should be taken because it is possible to transform those strategies into revenue sources that may risk vulnerability and exclusion.

Abstract

The idea of social inclusion has garnered considerable attention, especially in the context of two recent developments: the Sustainable Development Goals and the heightened attention to inequality. This paper reviews the manner and extent to which social inclusion is addressed in the first 17 Systematic Country Diagnostics (SCDs), which are ex ante, country-level assessments conducted by the World Bank Group, ahead of the preparation of its Country Partnership Frameworks. In addition to this primary purpose, the paper fulfils three other purposes. It allows for a broader reflection on the value of the social inclusion construct in macro-level diagnostics; it takes the opportunity to develop and refine a methodology to assess social inclusion and finally, it positions the narrative on social inclusion into the ongoing discourse on poverty, shared prosperity, inequality and the thinking around the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
