Abstract

Although media education is a comparatively new area of studies in Hong Kong, it is already flourishing. Why? This contribution identifies the education reform as an important factor in encouraging the development of media education in the last decade, and the three major driving forces of this reform have been: the emphasis on civic education since Hong Kong’s return to China sovereignty, the introduction of information technology (ICT), and the recent review of the curriculum. The author also aims to find out whether the patterns used in media education development are their own Asian models or, on the contrary, they follow Wes tern patterns.

Abstract

On-line journalism completes 15 years of existence in 2009. The characteristics of journalism have evolved with information technology. Interaction and hypertextuality are two elements that configure the essence of the relationship between journalism and new information and communication technologies. This research analyzes the profile and elements of on-line journalism, as well as the transmitter and receiver in this communication process. The research corpus is 10 international media and the following Mexican media: 100 newspapers, 30 television stations and 30 radio stations, all with more than 10 years’ on-line experience. Also, two hundred e-mails were sent out to journalists, leader writers and webmasters.

The paper explores the significance of human potentials management in micro and macro transport systems and investigates to what extent do the human potentials represent the factor of growth and development of transport systems. The facts gathered in this paper should represent the quantitative starting points for viewing the specifics of transport service productions and future movements on the transport labour market, and the possibilities of information technologies implementation in transport human potentials management optimizations, all with the aim of producing new and of improving the inherited comparative advantages of the Croatian transport systems. Temeljni cilj ove znanstvene rasprave jest istražiti značenje upravljanja ljudskim potencijalima u mikro i makro prometnim sustavima, odnosno mogu li i u kojoj mjeri ljudski potencijali biti čimbenikom rasta i razvoja prometnih sustava. Dobivene spoznaje u ovoj znanstvenoj raspravi trebaju predstavljati kvalitetna polazišta za sagledavanje specifičnosti proizvodnje prometnih usluga i budućih kretanja na prometnome tržištu rada, te mogućnosti implementacije informacijskih tehnologija u optimalizaciji upravljanja ljudskim potencijalima u prometu, a sve s ciljem proizvođenja novih i oplemenjivanja naslijeđenih komparativnih prednosti hrvatskoga prometnoga sustava.

Crowdsourcing is an organized way of involving people in decision-making and production. Crowdsourced"br" products, like Wikipedia, are replacing established products. Crowdsourced transport services, like UberTaxi, are"br" replacing established transport providers. Crowdsourced advice, like Trip Advisor, is replacing established experts."br" Crowdsourcing is becoming ubiquitous as people and organizations realize that it helps them make better decisions"br" and produce better products. This paper is predicated on the belief that crowdsourcing is key innovation needed"br" for public transport to thrive in this age of rapid change. It presents a model structure for helping understand"br" crowdsourcing and examples of how public transport organizations can use crowdsourcing. This paper’s goal is to"br" help practitioners and researchers implement and understand crowdsourcing by presenting a broad survey of how"br" crowdsourcing is being used today.

Abstract

The author reflects on the iSchools movement and the need to increase the study of computing in LIS courses. He argues that libraries and archives are only a tiny portion of the places information professionals might work, although library topics occupy almost the entire content of the coursework. The iSchools concept applied in the School of Library and Information Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is analysed. The iSchools try to integrate the concept of information from the theoretical point of view, given that information can be defined in many different ways because it is a complex reality that can be analyzed simultaneously from different points of view.

Abstract

Intelligent Transportation Systems emerged to meet the increasing demand for more efficient, reliable and safer transportation systems. These systems combine electronic, communication and information technologies with traffic engineering to respond to the former challenges. The benefits of Intelligent Transportation Systems have been extensively proved in many different facets of transport and Soft Computing has played a major role in achieving these successful results. Abstract

Recent developments of information technology and mobile lifestyle have forced drivers to multitask while they drive. The in-vehicle “infotainment” technology is already taking its place in the transformation of vehicles towards more intelligent and interactive devices rather than staying as mere transportation convenience. This transformation has several advantages such as easy route navigation, real-time traffic information, and staying connected with work or people while traveling. However, it has several drawbacks concerning the impact on driver cognitive load and attention sources. Therefore, it is crucial to take advantage of state-of-the-art in-vehicle technology to produce counter-measure systems that monitor the driver status and reduce driver workload adaptively depending on the context. In recognition and analysis of the driving context together with driver status monitoring, computer vision applications supply crucial information both in the vehicle (i.e., driver head and eye tracking) and out of the vehicle (i.e., lane, pedestrian, and vehicle detection and tracking, and road sign recognition). In this chapter, we provide a broad range of computer vision applications for CA-IVS from the literature and our previous studies, and we report our current research efforts. One of the main topics in IT Portfolio Management, according to IT Governance models, is to plan and control information systems that are aligned with the company mission and objectives. The goal of the IT Portfolio Planning is to define which information systems are necessary and with which priority. In general, planning methodologies trace directions from a present point to a future and desired target. However, in many cases, companies can not control situations; events may occur that can not be avoided. A scenarios-based planning methodology can help managers to identify future events, their probability and consequences. A scenario represents a future situation that can not be controlled nor can be avoided. However, the study of future scenarios can help managers to plan reactions, so that company can create mechanisms for avoiding problems or for minimizing bad consequences. The goal of this chapter is to present an adaptation of the scenario-based methodology for IT and Information Systems Planning. The chapter will describe in details each step of the proposed methodology and discuss a study case. Steps include the identification of different scenarios and their corresponding antecedent events, the determination of probabilities and consequences of the events, how to calculate risks and how to plan Information Systems and IT resources to manage each scenario. This chapter discusses theories and methods for analyzing the interrelationship of human activities in space and time, focusing on time geography; and elegant and powerful framework. The relevance of time geography for analyzing real world transportation and communication systems has improved tremendously in recent years with the rise of geographic information technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS) and the global positioning system (GPS). At the same time, information technologies such the Internet and mobile telephone have drastically altered the relationships between geo-space and time in the real world, creating fascinating and imperative research challenges.
