Informative treatment of the mapuches in the newspaper El Mercurio. A content analysis based on the Framing Theory

Abstract
This paper analyzes the information treatment of the Mapuche people in the newspaper El Mercurio during two periods. First, between 1950 and 1973 (twentieth century); and second, during the years 2010, 2013 and 2014, (21st century). To this end, a corpus of 340 journalistic texts has been selected, of which 147 correspond to the 20th century (1950-1970) and 193, to the 21st century (2010, 2013-2014). The analysis shows that most of the frames are linked to conflicts, criminal prosecutions and arson attacks; so that El Mercurio prioritizes connotations and negative events to inform about the Mapuche indigenous people.

Transparency of government healthcare websites: a predictive model based on the main public administrations of Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Spain

Abstract
Transparency and public accountability are two essential aspects of public administrations because they help to prevent possible cases of corruption and encourage citizen participation. In this sense, transparency is a communicative, not merely administrative or legal, process between public institutions and citizens. The main objective of this study is to identify predictive factors of transparency in government healthcare centers in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Spain in 2021. To do this, we analyzed the websites of 64 public administrations from these countries. Content analysis was applied to assess the presence of 24 indicators on each website. The results for the studied cases reveal an association between the level of transparency and three factors: healthcare systems, internet access, and administration levels. We also identified a predictive factor that should be considered in future studies on the transparency of healthcare websites: the likelihood of decreased transparency was reduced by 91% for public healthcare systems (Ecuador and Spain) as opposed to mixed public –private healthcare systems (Chile and Colombia). We thereby conclude that the involvement of the State, at least in matters related to the healthcare field, favors greater access to information by the community, at the same time as providing greater social responsibility because of substantial communication of the activities carried out by these centers, as well as how and by whom.

Differences in school anxiety and self-concept in Chilean adolescents

Abstract
Anxiety and self-concept are personal variables with a big influence on learning and academic performance. The aim of this study was to analyse the differences in school anxiety depending on the scores of the eleven dimensions of self-concept. 1, 414 Chilean students of middle education participated, 695 men and 719 women aged between 13 and 18 years (M = 15.31, SD = 1.45). School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) and Self-Description Questionnaire II-Short Form (SDQII-S) were administered to assess the school anxiety and the self-concept, respectively. The results revealed that adolescents with low scores on self-concept had significantly higher scores in school anxiety than their peers with high scores on self-concept. This pattern of results was similar in all dimensions of self-concept with the exception of two, the verbal academic self-concept and the truthfulness-sincerity scale, which statistically significant differences were not obtained.

Probabilistic Approach to the Service Life Prediction of Timber Claddings

Abstract
The service life of buildings and components is extremely difficult to model and predict, mainly due to the uncertainty and variability associated with the degradation phenomena. These uncertainties are usually related with the intrinsic randomness of natural phenomena, such as the environmental degradation agents. In order to deal with these uncertainties, in this study, a stochastic approach is used, to model the service life of timber claddings. For this purpose, a logistic regression analysis is used to evaluate the probability of timber claddings to reach the end of their service life over time. Moreover, the impact of the environmental exposure conditions (e.g. facades orientation, distance from the ocean, exposure to damp and exposure to wind/rain action), which influence the degradation and service life of timber claddings, is also evaluated. The proposed models are applied to 150 timber claddings, located in Valdivia (South Chile), which have been analysed during an extensive fieldwork survey. The results obtained in this study aid the definition of maintenance plans, in a technically informed manner, in order to promote the conservation of these claddings, which are an important symbol of the local identity of this region, depicting a complexity of cultural values, inherited by Spanish and German colonisations.

“Iron Cages.” Technical Discussions after the 1906 Valparaíso Earthquake and Reconstruction with New Techniques and Materials

Abstract
A few months after the San Francisco earthquake and fire in April 1906, the prosperous and cosmopolitan city of Valparaíso (Chile) suffered a similar catastrophe, sparking the forerunner application of new materials and construction systems. After the earthquake, reports, and articles were produced analysing the characteristics of the earthquake and its effects on the built environment, emulating at a more basic level those emanating from the ad hoc commissions created to analyse the earthquakes in San Francisco and Messina (1908). At the theoretical level, solutions for reconstruction were discussed between reinforced concrete and steel structures, and the applications of these new materials, structural systems, and constructions in the world were closely observed. The solutions used for reconstruction ranged from proven inefficiencies prior to the earthquake to new techniques and materials. In this area, the use of steel with imported pre-manufactured systems as well as local solutions stands out. The need to reconstruct public and private buildings in Valparaiso with a reliable and fast system leaned the choice at the beginning towards the use of pre-manufactured metal structures. The article will expose and analyse the discussions of the time regarding construction systems and materials from a seismic-resistant point of view, complemented with the description of three emblematic cases of metal medium height construction in Valparaiso, after the earthquake: the Hucke Factory, Cardonal Market and the “Jabonería La Estrella” Factory.
