Abstract

Technology is changing the way we move and reshaping cities and society. Shared and on-demand mobility represent notable transportation shifts in the 21st century. In recent years, mobility on demand (MOD)—where consumers access mobility, goods, and services on-demand by dispatching shared modes, courier services, public transport, and other innovative strategies—has grown rapidly due to technological advancements; changing consumer preferences; and a range of economic, environmental, and social factors. New attitudes toward sharing, MOD, and mobility as a service (MaaS) are changing traveler behavior and creating new opportunities and challenges for public transportation. This chapter discusses similarities and differences between the evolving concepts of MaaS and MOD. Next, it characterizes the range of existing public transit and MOD service models and enabling partnerships. The chapter also explores emerging trends impacting public transportation. While vehicle automation could result in greater public transit competition in the future, it could also foster new opportunities for transit enhancements (e.g., microtransit services, first- and last-mile connections, reduced operating costs). The chapter concludes with a discussion of how MOD/MaaS partnerships and automation could enable the public transit industry to reinvent itself, making it more attractive and competitive with private vehicle ownership and use.

Automated driving is one of the most discussed disruptive technologies of this decade. It promises to increase drivers' safety and comfort, improve traffic flow, and lower fuel consumption. This has a significant impact on our everyday life and mobility behavior. Beyond the passengers of the vehicle, it also impacts others, for example by lowering the barriers to visit distant relatives. In line with the CHI2019 conference theme, our aim is to weave the threads of vehicle automation by gathering people from different disciplines, cultures, sectors, communities, and backgrounds (designers, researchers, and practitioners) in one community to look into concrete future scenarios of driving automation and its impact on HCI research and practice. Using design fiction, we will look into the future and use this fiction to guide discussions on how automated driving can be made a technology that works for people and society.

Abstract

—With increasing numbers of vehicles using low level automation and higher level automation expected in the future, significant effects are expected on traffic flow. Despite much simulation and driving simulator research on SAE level 1 vehicles, there remain many questions in regard to the effects of the systems on traffic flow. The effects of higher levels of automation are even more difficult to estimate, as these vehicles are not even present on roads at this time, let alone in sufficient numbers to analyze. In this research, we propose a methodology for a-priori analysis of potential conflict situations: Method for Explorative TRaffic scenario Observation and Analysis (METRO-A). It is applied to the case of automated driving in conventional traffic to analyze potential difficulties that SAE level 3 and 4 and higher vehicles may encounter in mixed traffic conditions, for a weaving section case-study. Abstract

In the past decades, social development has motivated a notable growth on transportation necessities. In 2020, higher tendencies are expected, so transportation demand will grow about a 20%. Besides, one of the foundations of the UE's Green Policy initiative for freight is the transportation sea-to-ground through the so-called “Short sea shipping” or “Motorways of the sea”. Facing this scenario, it is needed the development of technologies and solutions which contribute to raise the profitability, flexibility and efficiency of marine transportation. This will lead to more competitive freight, so investing on such technologies is a guarantee of success. On this basis, within the framework of the Innterconecta 2013 programme, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Centre for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI), the project AUTOPORT is being developed, which objectives are here detailed. The main objective of the project is to develop the technologies needed for a fully automated stowage on roll-on/roll-off ships in order to improve the logistic flow, reduce stowage times and maximize the efficiency of the space occupation in hold. This will be accomplished by both the automation of logistic processes and terminal trucks. Automation of processes aims for obtaining a stowage plan which reduces to the minimum the obstructions between cargo and trucks in the process and also the imbalance of the hold, in order to allow easy and smooth load operations even in rough sea conditions. Automation of terminal trucks consist in the efficient use of localization, path planning and control for taking a specifically designated roll trailer and stowing it on the exact hold location pointed by the stowage plan, all without human intervention. Abstract

Nowadays, vehicle safety is constantly increasing thanks to the improvement of vehicle passive and active safety. However, on a daily usage of the car, traffic jams remains a problem. With limited space for road infrastructure, automation of the driving task on specific situation seems to be a possible solution. The French project ABV, which stands for low speed automation, tries to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept and to prove the benefits.
