Abstract

This article is about the great changes that have happened in recent years in international politics as well as the challenges that these thorough transformations imply. Some examples of great significance are the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), the attack on the New York World Trade Centers twin towers and the Pentagon (2001), and the crash of Wall Street (2008). These are historical events that have had practical and theoretical repercussions for different humanistic disciplines like political science, law and international studies. The authors purpose is to analyze both practically and theoretically the new paradigms of global politics. The impact of globalization on Latin America is given special attention. The author concludes by presenting some alternatives in order to resolve the dilemmas posed by globalization.

Abstract

Workplace violence (WPV) is becoming an issue that needs immediate attention in the United States, especially during this period as more states are adopting the “stand your ground laws to promote worker protection.” This study was conducted to investigate how WPV has contributed to an unsafe environment for nurses and nursing assistants who work in long-term medical care facilities. A structure questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Three facilities were sampled and 80 nurses and certified nursing assistants participated in the study. Ninety-two percent (n = 74) were female and 8% (n = 6) were male. Approximately 62% were black or African American, approximately 33% were Caucasians, and only 2% were from other ethnicities. We found that 65% of the participants had experienced WPV while 41% believed that management shows little or no concern for their safety. Approximately 23% of respondents believed that reporting supervisors WPV act is an unsafe action. In addition, 22% of those who reported that they have experienced WPV believed that the work environment is not safe to perform their duties. This significant difference in perception of workplace safety between those who had experienced WPV and those who had not was significant (t = 3.95, df = 158, p < 0.0001). WPV is an epidemic problem that affects all health-care professionals. The findings of this study could help long-term medical care facilities' management identify the areas to focus on mitigating, controlling, and/or eliminating incidents of WPV.

Abstract

This article analyses the internet functionality used by the terrorists responsible for the Madrid bombings of March 11, 2004. The computers and USB memory drives seized by the Spanish police form the main source for the analysis. This case study is contrasted with the contemporary theoretical framework of the relation between terrorism and the internet.

Abstract

This article is focused on the media coverage of the terrorist attacks occurred in Barcelona and Cambrils, Spain, in August 2017. The study analyzes the digital version of three international newspapers: The guardian, El país and El periódico de Catalunya. The content they published is compared with the Code of Ethics of the Professional Journalists Association of Catalonia and the Guidelines on news coverage of terrorism from the Catalan Audiovisual Council (CAC-CPC, 2016). The results show that the newspapers meet these criteria, with the exceptions of the protection of minors and the protection of privacy.
