Abstract

Content management –both in its meaning, more related to the creation and maintenance of web sites and in its broader approach referred to the management of textual and documentary information– has been reinforced in recent years in the practice of most organizations. To this end has contributed the maturity of commercial and open source software products. During 2009, despite the crisis scenario, there has been much activity in this area of documentary computer science. The text summarizes the main developments that have characterized the year 2009 from the reports published by leading consultancy firms. It also identifies some significant trends and events expected for 2010, including the consolidation of the Cmis standard.

Abstract. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is the most popular crowdsourced geographic information project. The main factor that still limits the practical use of OSM is the lack of quality assurance. OSM quality assessment is thus a well-studied topic in literature, with most of the studies evaluating the quality by comparison against reference datasets. In contrast to these extrinsic approaches, OSM intrinsic assessment evaluates the quality by only analysing OSM itself. This study contributes to OSM intrinsic assessment by introducing an open source procedure to evaluate the temporal accuracy, up-to-dateness and lineage of OSM. Two workflows are presented: the first allows accessing the historical evolution of single OSM objects through an interactive web application, while the second aggregates and stores results on a user-defined grid to enable further GIS processing. The methodology is applied on the OSM nodes in the city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by computing the following measures on the cells of an hexagonal grid: total number of nodes, average date of creation and last edit of nodes, average update frequency of nodes, average number of versions of nodes, average and total number of different contributors on nodes. Results highlight the mapping dynamics driven by the Dar Ramani Huria project, focused on increasing flood preparedness and resilience. When moving from the peripheral areas to the city centre, OSM is characterized by a progressively higher density of nodes, created earlier in time and updated by a higher number of contributors, which are all indexes of a general higher data quality.

This paper presents the Tools4MSP software package, a Python-based Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for geospatial analysis in support of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and marine environmental management. The suite was initially developed within the ADRIPLAN data portal, that has been recently upgraded into the Tools4MSP Geoplatform (data.tools4msp.eu), an integrated web platform that supports MSP through the application of different tools, e.g., collaborative geospatial modelling of cumulative effects assessment (CEA) and marine use conflict (MUC) analysis. The package can be used as stand-alone library or as collaborative webtool, providing user-friendly interfaces appropriate to decision-makers, regional authorities, academics and MSP stakeholders. An effective MSP-oriented integrated system of web-based software, users and services is proposed. It includes four components: the "jats:italic"Tools4MSP Geoplatform"/jats:italic" for interoperable and collaborative sharing of geospatial datasets and for MSP-oriented analysis, the "jats:italic"Tools4MSP package as stand-alone library"/jats:italic" for advanced geospatial and statistical analysis, the "jats:italic"desktop applications"/jats:italic" to simplify data curation and the "jats:italic"third party data repositories"/jats:italic" for multidisciplinary and multilevel geospatial datasets integration. The paper presents an application example of the Tools4MSP GeoNode plugin and an example of Tools4MSP stand-alone library for CEA in the Adriatic Sea. Despite criticism that receives, issues such as business rigour, the generation of partners’ networks and a strong entrepreneurial approach make open source a completely viable business model.

Reference services in academic libraries are far from dead and technologies of the social web are facilitating and encouraging an ever increasing demand for virtual reference with applications available to everyone. The open source software LibraryH3lp has enabled the Library of the University of Seville to establish a virtual reference service shared among 19 libraries to answer common and specialized questions and explain the use of the Fama library catalog. We present a first assessment of the service that will go live in the academic year 2009-2010.

In 2016, the University of Cádiz Library carried out the migration of the integrated library management system (ILS) Millennium to Koha, an open source program. Based on the technological and economic situation of the library, this paper describes in detail the process of selecting the new ILS, stages of migration, parameter adjustment and deployment process. At the conclusion of the project, Koha is positively valued, as well as the process carried out for its implementation at the University of Cadiz Library.

The open source language CSL (citation style language) is used to describe citation and bibliographic reference formats. In this article it helps define the format used by the journal El profesional de la información (EPI). In addition to other characteristics, the basic labels that have been used to fit the journal requirements are described.

Current technological expansion has allowed a new generation of consumers to move from being mere users to architects of their own goods following the “do it yourself” (DIY) trend. Fabrication laboratories (fablabs) enhance this trend and complement it with the possibility of collaborating with other users (DIWO), allowing to replicate any project in another fablab, since they all share two elements: machines and free/open-source tools. Thanks to their capacities in the dissemination of knowledge through networks, these spaces expand the limits of such collaboration on a planetary scale. The diffusion of their projects –which is shown as one of the pillars of this ecology- requires an adequate documentation. This article identifies the elements that influence the diffusion process carried out in fablabs to obtain, finally, an explanatory model about project documentation.
