Abstract

It is suggested that university librarians should collaborate in the correct implementation of orcid (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) author identifiers. There is a danger of duplicating the orcids when a university decides to implement a mass registration of its researchers. Librarians have a complex and valuable field of action, giving advice to researchers about signature formats and the characteristics and advantages of orcid identifiers.

Abstract

The expected disappearance of the physical library at the academy is motivating librarians to assume new roles and develop new services, such as CRAI (resource center for learning and research), or information commons. CRAIs seek to overcome wishful thinking and lack of training with protocols and quality products such as CRIS, tools for the evaluation of the scientific production of the institution. Some authors criticize the lack of transparency of many CRIS products, which are private and not user friendly despite the technical quality, as well as the persistence of obsolete bibliometric techniques. In conclusion, the creation of a national super-CRIS is proposed, which should be managed by expert professionals and with political capacities.

Abstract

The creation of bibliometric services within university libraries opens up new professional possibilities for libraries, when they are in the midst of rethinking many of their functions. Services to the researcher, such as supporting the management of their curricula vitae through CRIS (current research information system), finding quality measures of journals, or providing advice during the evaluation processes, along with elaborating bibliometric reports in order to support the governance of the University, are postulated as new tasks that can be carried out by the library staff. For these new tasks to be effective, librarians must have some transversal and specific competences. Moreover, they need some of the skills associated with communication competences, because of the importance of communicating properly the work that has been done by the Unit, within the library and for the users and institution.

The article also describes the human resources used for the implementation of the projects and the working method usually followed. Abstract

The Rector Gabriel Ferraté Library (BRGF) at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) has recently launched an electronic books lending service. This paper describes the experience of evaluating the e-book readers in the current market, the content to be made available on these devices, and how well they actually work, as well as the results of 2 months of ongoing service. Finally, it points to short-term future actions with all four copies of iRex iLiad 2nd Edition available in the library.

In the context of the knowledge society, it is necessary that university libraries understand that their challenges are correlated with the strategic sectors of national and regional economic development: University, State and Industry. The article seeks to generate an analysis of the relationship between R&D development and economic development, and of the strategic importance of enhancing industrial clusters through the university library as part of the third mission of universities.
