In 2010 technology trends became popular that were as diverse and innovative as net neutrality, internet television, video on demand, mobile commerce (due to the increase of the smartphone market), new algorithms that try to compete with Google, content spam, augmented reality, progress on ebooks and transmedia, multitouch interaction, digital out-of-home (dooh) advertising or digital signage, and open data web (open data and linked data) that replaces the semantic web, while the popularization of web 2.0 leads to intensive use of social networks in all areas of digital life, including social commerce.

Abstract

Technological innovation requires major adjustments in organizations, companies and public services. To understand the transformation of libraries it is vital to understand the transformations in access to information and education. Both public and academic libraries, are becoming learning and socialisation areas where information and digital literacy are becoming a highlight in their daily activity.

Abstract

The experience of the Library of the Faculty of Law of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is presented, where patrons use tablets to access books that have been acquired in electronic format. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of titles that are being distributed in paper with an electronic copy attached (duo). These are characterized by the indivisibility of the pack and the increase in their price. This system encourages both the individual and private use of the copies by using a code associated with the user’s profile. The creation of a specific system based on the use of a tablet in order to provide the user public access to these copies is described. The system duplicates the number of copies available to users. In addition to access to e-books, a selection of electronic resources and programs previously offered by the University has been included in the tablets. The tablets are also configured for teaching uses, both for seminars and exams.

presente pesquisa viabilizou, possivelmente, a expansão do arcabouço teórico desenvolvido por Suarez (2004) e Lynn et al. (1996), seguindo a mesma direção dos resultados obtidos na pesquisa longitudinal desenvolvida por Yu et al. (2011). Desenvolvemos um estudo descritivo de modo a analisar um período de 42 anos com o objetivo de entender os fatores que influenciaram a trajetória do desenvolvimento da tecnologia do veículo elétrico na GM de modo que utilizamos o arcabouço teórico desenvolvido por Suarez (2004) como norteador das observações empíricas. Coletamos dados secundários da tecnologia de baterias referente a fase um (realização de P&D) e dados secundários da tecnologia do veículo elétrico referente às fases dois (protótipos) e fase três (criação de mercado) para a construção do estudo de caso. As observações dessas fases viabilizaram os seguintes resultados: a possível expansão do arcabouço conceitual do Suarez (2004) em relação ao nível da firma (sondagem e aprendizagem tecnológica, sondagem e aprendizagem mercadológica e transferência de conhecimento) e ao nível do ambiente (setores industriais associados, pressão social, política internacional e questão econômica); e a possível ampliação da vertente teórica de sondagem e aprendizagem mercadológica desenvolvida por Lynn et al. (1996) no sentido de constatarmos a sondagem e aprendizagem tecnológica em um momento anterior a sondagem e aprendizagem mercadológica. Na década passada, iniciou-se um processo de efervescência de novos entrantes na indústria do veículo elétrico e, nessa década, duas das principais montadoras mundiais (GM e Nissan) lançaram os seus primeiros veículos elétricos para serem produzidos em larga escala. Essas evidências empíricas indicam uma possibilidade real da tecnologia do veículo elétrico estar em um estágio de maturidade que viabilize a realização do processo de transição tecnológica indicada no arcabouço conceitual desenvolvido por Utterback e Abernathy, em 1975. Nesse sentido, os resultados teóricos obtidos nessa pesquisa podem apoiar o processo de tomada de decisão no contexto de incentivo a essa tecnologia tanto da perspectiva da firma quanto da perspectiva do governo. In alignment with the results obtained in the longitudinal research conducted by Yu et al. (2011), the present study possibly enabled the expansion of the theoretical framework developed by Suarez (2004) and Lynn et al. (1996). A descriptive study was developed so as to analyse a 42 year period with views to understanding the factors which influenced the course of development of electric vehicle technology at GM. Thus, to guide empirical observations, the theoretical framework developed by Suarez (2004) was employed. To build the study case, phase one (execution of R&D) battery technology and phase two (prototypes) and three (market shaping) electric vehicle technology secondary data was collected. Findings observed in these phases gave rise to the following results: the possible expansion of Suarez´s (2004) conceptual framework at corporate level (technological survey and learnings, market survey and learnings and knowledge transfer) and at environment level (associated industrial segments, social pressure, international politics and economic issues); and the possible extension of the theoretical market probe and learning line of thought developed by Lynn et al. (1996) in as much as the identification of the occurrence of technological probe and learning, at a moment preceding that of market probe and learning, is concerned. Over the last decade, a new entrant commotion process sprung within the electric vehicle industry and during this decade, two of the top world manufacturers (GM and Nissan) launched their first electrical vehicles for mass production purposes. This empirical evidence indicates that currently, there is an effective possibility of electric vehicle technology being at a stage of maturity whereby the technological transition mentioned in the conceptual framework developed by Utterback and Abernathy in 1975, is feasible. To this effect, the theoretical results obtained in this study may support decision processes in as much as incentives are concerned, both from a corporate and government perspective.

Neste contexto, os veículos elétricos (VE) caracterizam-se como uma das alternativas possíveis frente a este cenário de novas demandas. Essa dissertação avança nesta temática ao investigar, descrever e analisar a trajetória histórica, tecnológica e de mercado do veículo elétrico. Para o aprofundamento ao tema, observou-se a competição tecnológica pelo sistema de propulsão dominante, que ocorreu entre: 1) o motor a vapor; 2) os conversores eletromecânicos de energia (motores elétricos); e 3) os motores a combustão interna, sendo o último caracterizado como vencedor. Ao longo dos 50 anos que seguiriam a partir do fechamento do motor a combustão interna em 1920 como paradigma tecnológico, os veículos elétricos praticamente desaparecem. O projeto do veículo elétrico só foi retomado a partir da década de 1970, com os estímulos vindos da agenda ambiental, da poluição do ar e seus impactos na saúde pública e do aumento do uso dos combustíveis fósseis. Porém, será a partir do século XXI que o segmento dos veículos elétricos irá ascender tanto do lado tecnológico quanto de mercado. Foram observadas três configurações mais promissoras a respeito da tecnologia dos veículos elétricos: a bateria, híbrido e a células a combustíveis. As três configurações apresentam barreiras e desafios, os quais estão sendo sistematicamente trabalhados pelas empresas que estão dispensando esforços para o segmento. Isto é observado com base na evolução das patentes publicadas sobre veículos elétricos e suas tecnologias. Sendo assim, é possível, ainda, constatar a evolução das vendas dos veículos elétricos nos Estados Unidos, Japão e em um pequeno número de países europeus. O êxito mercadológico fica para os modelos híbridos, com vendas sete vezes superiores aos veículos elétricos a bateria. Transpondo esta discussão para o contexto brasileiro atual, salientamos que o Brasil possui os atores (órgãos governamentais, empresas e instituições públicas de pesquisa) e condições (mercado automobilístico consolidado e know-how) necessários para a formação de um complexo automobilístico voltado aos veículos elétricos, porém as ações em curso no país são pontuais. Ainda que tais iniciativas possam favorecer a criação de competências específicas para o veículo elétrico, elas se mostram pouco efetivas para criar as condições que permitam o Brasil ocupar posição de destaque neste mercado. Ao menos que se projete um rol de políticas claras de apoio e suporte ao desenvolvimento de tecnologias locais destinadas ao veículo elétrico, poucos avanços serão conquistados neste campo tecnológico Abstract: Automobile industry across the world is undergoing structural change. Advances in emission regulations and the effects of oil price fluctuations are forcing carmakers towards new product programs that use new technologies in order to increase the energy efficiency of vehicles, reduce emissions and decrease environment impacts. In this context, electric vehicles have been considered as one of the possible alternatives for this scenario of new demands. This dissertation advances on this topic to investigate, describe and analyze the historical and technological trajectories and market behavior of the electric vehicle. It was observed a technological competition by dominant propulsion system, that had occurred among: 1) the steam engine; 2) electromechanical energy converters (electric motors); and 3) internal combustion engines, the last being characterized as the most used. Throughout the following 50 years from the engine closure based on the internal combustion in 1920, electric vehicles practically disappeared. The electric vehicle project was only resumed after the 1970s, due to the environmental agenda, the air pollution and its impacts on public health and the increase of fossil fuels prices. However, in the 21st century, the segment of electric vehicles has ascended in both technological and market fields. Therefore, it is possible to identify the three most promising settings about electric vehicle technology: battery electric vehicle, hybrid vehicle and fuel cells vehicle. The three configurations have obstacles and challenges, which are being systematically tackled by companies that are dispensing efforts for the segment, based on the evolution of patents published concerning the electric vehicles and their technologies. Thus, it is possible to verify the evolution of the electric vehicles selling in the United States, Japan and a few European countries. The world market success is related to hybrids models, selling seven times more than the battery electric vehicle. In the current Brazilian context, the country has the government agencies, companies and public research intuitions and had the conditions (mature automobile market and know-how) for the formation of an automobile complex of electric vehicles, with off actions. Although such initiatives may favor the creation of specific competencies for electric vehicle, they show little effective to create conditions for the Brazil occupy a prominent position in this market. Abstract

How Uber affects public transit ridership is a relevant policy question facing cities worldwide. Theoretically, Uber’s effect on transit is ambiguous: while Uber is an alternative mode of travel, it can also increase the reach and flexibility of public transit’s fixed-route, fixed-schedule service. We estimate the effect of Uber on public transit ridership using a difference-in-differences design that exploits variation across U.S. metropolitan areas in both the intensity of Uber penetration and the timing of Uber entry. We find that Uber is a complement for the average transit agency, increasing ridership by five percent after two years. This average effect masks considerable heterogeneity, with Uber increasing ridership more in larger cities and for smaller transit agencies. Document type: Article
