Abstract

This document shows a state-of-the-art in the information retrieval landscape, with special emphasis on recent trends, strategies and experiences during 2009, as well as research and development expectations in this field for the near future (2010). The paper first gathers a simple review about the growing importance and complexity of Information Retrieval in our discipline, deepening then about the challenge for Librarianship and Information Science for the second decade of 21st century: not only to retrieve information but also to “link data”.

Abstract

In a few years we have evolved from bibliographic reference managers that only worked offline to management systems on the Web as a research tool. They make it easy to share, add and tag references. They support scientific discovery through the networks that are created between researchers’ personal bibliographies on related topics.

Abstract

The concept of Science 2.0 is introduced and analysed based on its principal characteristics: user participation and collaboration, as well as free information exchange by means of web applications. A categorisation of tools for main web 2.0 functionalities for scientists is detailed: blog networks, journals with 2.0 tools, online reference managers and social tagging, open data and information reutilisation, social networks, and audio and video-science. Main factors influencing the use of these tools are presented. Finally, the consequences for scientific activity of general adoption of these services and applications are discussed.
