Abstract

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an emergent technology that is currently growing in importance. Companies can improve inventory control and track their products by gathering data from RFID labels on the products. Most of the applications for libraries use RFID of 13.56MHz or less, following ISO standards 15693 and 18000-3. The components and operation of an RFID system are described and applications in diverse sectors are noted, particularly with respect to libraries. A general RFID implementation model for a library is presented and practical applications currently in use are described, along with the benefits that result.

Abstract

Private car mobility registers a high accident rate and, in addition, in 2014 in the EU-28, around 70% of the overall"br" CO2 emissions from transport were generated by road mode. As a result, a modal shift of at least a part of passenger"br" transport in urban areas, from private car to sustainable transport systems is desirable. Several policies have been"br" adopted in the EU in this direction. The SaveMyBike project regards the development of a rewarding system for"br" sustainable mobility based on an open source platform able to monitor systematically trips in the city, starting to"br" integrate the platform with a service to incentive private bike use by means of UHF-RFID systems, creating secure"br" areas for bike parking and finding stolen bicycles. The real testing application to the Livorno case study from the"br" beginning of 2018. Then, SaveMyBike project introduces four innovations: it’s, for the first time, an open source"br" rewarding platform, called GOOD_GO linked to an anti-theft system for private bikes, it is applied to a whole city"br" and it introduces a ‘financially hot system’ for municipalities able to find financial resource from bike services.

Abstract

Road transport law enforcement is facing new challenges against the background of increasingly congested traffic conditions. An ideal law enforcement system must enable authorities to detect, identify and act against illegal road users with minimum disruption of normal traffic flows. This paper presents a new concept for in-traffic law enforcement that overcomes many of the limitations of existing approaches. The SmartRoad system combines the best abilities of imaging, automated identification, radio communications and artificial intelligence technologies to identify not only vehicles with anomalous identities but also anomalous behavior displayed by legal vehicles. The proposed system utilizes the combined abilities of traffic cameras and RFID to firstly detect vehicles and subsequently verify their true identity. Such information is passed downstream to enable the removal of such vehicles from the road with minimal disruption to other road users. As more historical statistics representing normal and abnormal road usage are collected the system will learn from such data in order to improve its ability to reduce both false positives and negatives. Successful deployment of the SmartRoad concept should therefore result in a self-regulating traffic system that discourages unacceptable road use and that adapts itself to new forms of road behavior.

Abstract

Developments in smart and automated driving raise questions about the future requirements of infrastructure. It"br" is highly likely that advances in transport will require close to real-time information on the condition of roads."br" The recent, speedy development of sensors may lead to the development of Smart Roads and in so doing,"br" provide the necessary real-time data. It is within this context that passive RFID sensors were tested in a series of"br" experiments to ascertain their suitability to measure asphalt concrete mix temperature during construction and"br" afterwards during the life of the pavement."br" Laboratory tests focused on the proper placement of the sensor in the asphalt concrete layer and"br" studying the latter’s influence on the sensor. Field experiments focused on the suitability to measure temperature,"br" traceability, robustness, and accuracy of the technology. The results show that reliable temperature measuring"br" with passive RFID tags is possible. The sensors are robust, portable, accurate and can be integrated into existing"br" measuring regimes such as determining asphalt concrete cooling rates during construction. While the cost of"br" passive RFID sensors is relatively low, the major disadvantage is that they cannot be read automatically, which"br" is crucial if the information is to be used to follow temperature developments over time or even provide asphalt"br" concrete temperature information to vehicles in order to warn for extreme road conditions. Ongoing experiments"br" with fiber optic sensors indicate that there may be other ways to measure temperature and possibly combine this"br" with performance indicators such as strain.

Abstract

With more than two billion passengers worldwide travelling by air each year, vast amounts of lost luggage and disposable paper adhesive luggage tags are pushing the aviation industry to improve luggage tracking and reduce the one-off adhesive luggage paper tags. This paper reviews the current application of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the luggage handling system and proposes the Internet of Things’ (IoT) development of the reusable luggage tag to facilitate aviation luggage handling, the tracking process and environmental conservation. A framework of IoT and its RFID components for the proposed reusable tag are presented. An integrated cyber-physical system, including a database management system and mobile app, for the reusable luggage tag is developed. Future studies will enhance the methodology of integrating the retail system, luggage tag, airport check-in counter, luggage handling system, aircraft, and the destination airport through the use of the tag, readers, antenna, and mobile devices. Abstract

nomalies such as leakage and bursts in water pipelines have severe consequences for the environment and the economy. To ensure the reliability of water pipelines, they must be monitored effectively. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have emerged as an effective technology for monitoring critical infrastructure such as water, oil and gas pipelines. In this paper, we present a scalable design and simulation of a water pipeline leakage monitoring system using Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and WSN technology. The proposed design targets long-distance aboveground water pipelines that have special considerations for maintenance, energy consumption and cost. The design is based on deploying a group of mobile wireless sensor nodes inside the pipeline and allowing them to work cooperatively according to a prescheduled order. Under this mechanism, only one node is active at a time, while the other nodes are sleeping. The node whose turn is next wakes up according to one of three wakeup techniques: location-based, time-based and interrupt-driven. In this paper, mathematical models are derived for each technique to estimate the corresponding energy consumption and memory size requirements. The proposed equations are analyzed and the results are validated using simulation. Document type: Article
