Abstract

Among the best practices of academic journals publishing, this note focusses on the NISO recommendation about the inclusion of supplemental materials. The paper justifies the need to give special treatment to these materials, which require specific metadata. Finally it relates these practices with the deep indexing trend among bibliographic database producers such as ProQuest.

Abstract

The discipline of information architecture (IA), although present in some way for over 50 years, has taken on special relevance with the advent of the Web and the explosion of the amount of available information. Nowadays, IA has clear pillars based on the managed content but especially on users, without forgetting the context. This article discusses components to combine when developing IA, and a basic methodology is identified. As the amount of information around us is still growing, IA continues to innovate with new forms of organization, more efficient search engines and Semantic Web technologies that let computers take care of the less creative part of coping with the avalanche of information.

Abstract

The success of information professionals in the coming years will depend on their commitment to research and development in the areas of identification, access, retrieval, storage, description and assessment of the vast amount of resources available. This research effort should be coordinated with computer scientists, not to seek their cooperation in specific technical tasks and developments, but to make significant progress in frontier areas of content sciences. Greater project participation by librarians is proposed, especially in European or international consortia, paying particular attention to the implementation of standards, advocacy of open access, exploitation of new interfaces, data networking and digitization. The process should include ethical issues, involve end users, promote resource integration platforms and extend formats coverage beyond text documents.
