Abstract

Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) is a meta-heuristic method based on foraging habits of honeybees. This technique was motivated by the analogy found between the natural behavior of bees searching for food and the behavior of optimization algorithms searching for an optimum in combinatorial optimization problems. BCO has been successfully applied to various hard combinatorial optimization problems, mostly in transportation, location and scheduling fields. There are some applications in the continuous optimization field that have appeared recently. Abstract

Most of the local cities of Japan are suffering from the depopulation in central district (C.D.). In Okayama city, the government had induced some strategies such as supply more condominiums for local revitalization since 2000. From the Basic Resident Register of Okayama, the population in C.D. Okayama has increased recently. This study has the goal to clarify the situation of condominium supply in this district by an investigation. Compared with the result of a same survey in C.D. Kyoto, the following findings are confirmed: population recovery is happening in the central district in both of the 2 cities. The dimension of the condominiums in Okayama is larger than that in Kyoto. The average dimension of the condominiums in Okayama is 14 stories building with 61 units of 110 m2 . Contrastingly, that in Kyoto is 11 storied building with 59 units of 82 m2 . Most of the condominiums in C.D. Kyoto are located closely to the railway or subway station, while those in C.D. Okayama are randomly located, because of the high dependence of automobile traffic. The previous usages of the sites of condominiums in Okayama are parking, housing and financial institute, and in Kyoto they are parking, shop or business building.

Abstract

In recent years, very few studies have classified and analysed the evolution of the business activities carried out by Spanish companies that provide information and document management services. Aware of the importance that these issues have for university centers and for graduate students of library and information science, this article presents the results obtained from an analysis of these companies, comparing them with available data from previous studies. Types of services currently offered by these companies, their geographical distribution, business scope, size and age, current data on their employment and selection policies, and future prospects in the midst of the current economic crisis are described. Novel contributions of this report are the analysis of business scope and age of these companies and the factors they take into account when selecting their employees.

Este trabalho visa identificar, a partir de um levantamento de dados dos fluxos de cargas conteinerizadas e custos operacionais de transporte, os locais mais promissores para a instalação de futuros terminais intermodais de carga rodo-ferroviários, com auxílio de um Sistema de Informações Geográficas (TransCAD), objetivando a redução dos custos e otimização das operações logísticas envolvidas na rede de transportes do estado de São Paulo. Simulações são feitas para a instalação de até dez terminais intermodais rodo-ferroviários em pontos estratégicos do interior do Estado, considerando-se duas condições: a primeira com um terminal existente só em Santos e todos os pontos candidatos escolhidos pelo modelo de localização das p-medianas do TransCAD e, a segunda, considerando-se, além de Santos, os oito terminais intermodais já existentes no Estado. Apresenta-se uma análise dos custos de rede e os mapas temáticos de áreas de influência de cada uma das soluções obtidas pelo modelo. Os resultados são comparados com o trabalho de TONDO (1992). Conclui-se que as soluções encontradas através de um novo enfoque de modelagem do problema, são significativamente diferentes daqueles propostos por TONDO (1992). Based on a data collection of containerized cargo flows and operational transport costs, this study has the objective of identifying promising points to install future road-rail intermodal container terminals, using a Geographic Information System (TransCAD) and the objective function of reducing costs and optimising logistic operations on the transport network of the state of São Paulo. Simulations are presented for the instalation of up to ten road-rail intermodal terminals at strategic locations in the interior of the State, considering two conditions: the first one, with only one terminal placed at the port of Santos and all the candidate points beeing chosen by the p-median location model of TransCAD, and the second one, considering Santos and the other eight existing intermodal terminals in the State. An analysis of the network costs and thematic maps of the influence areas of each solution are presented. The results are compared with the study by TONDO (1992). It is concluded that the solutions obtained by this new modeling focus of the problem, are considerably different from the ones obtained by TONDO (1992).

However, when NEMO-BS is applied to public transportation systems where mobile nodes (MNs) frequently get in/off the public transportation, significant signaling overhead owing to frequent and unnecessary binding updates can occur. To address this problem, we propose a delayed location management (DLM) scheme where an MN postpones its binding update for a pre-defined timer to mitigate the binding update overhead. To evaluate the performance of DLM, we develop an analytical model for the binding update cost and the packet delivery cost during the boarding time. Evaluation results demonstrate that DLM can reduce the binding update cost and packet delivery cost by choosing an appropriate timer.

The 9th International Conference on City Logistics, Tenerife, Iles Canaries, ESPAGNE, 17-/06/2015 - 19/06/2015; The aim of this paper is to study the location of the parcel industry, and its place in the spatial organization of logistics activities in the Paris Region. In particular, we wish to compare the location of the parcel industry to the location of other logistics activities. In order to do this, we review in part one the existing factors that determines the location of logistics activities. We use this literature review to draw initial conclusions on the distinctive characteristics of the parcel industry. In part two, we use existing data on the location of establishments in the Paris Region to study the dispersion of the parcel industry compared to the dispersion of other logistics activities. Finally, in part three, we provide a partial explanation for this difference: a spatial hysteresis of the big stakeholders of the parcel industry, and the emergence of innovative logistics solutions. Abstract

Within the EU-funded GeoCapacity project an economic analysis computer tool is developed for the evaluation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems comprising of a set of multiple sources of CO2 and storage locations. As a part of that tool, an algorithm has been developed to create low-cost pipeline networks to connect sources of CO2 and storage reservoirs. The main features of the algorithm are: •Input parameters are the size and location of CO2 sources and storage reservoirs•The algorithm determines the trajectory, capacity and costs of the connecting pipes•If necessary junctions are created, i.e. connections are created between sources and pipelines and/or storage locations and pipelines•The algorithm has a step wise approach. The pipeline network is built-up by successively adding a pipe in each step, until all sources are connected to storage reservoirs•In each step all possible combinations are examined and the one with the lowest costs is added to the system•The pipe costs have a non linear relation with the flow rate•Cost ranges for pipeline network are presented reflecting uncertainties in data of supply of CO2 from sources as well in storage capacity of sinks. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
