Abstract

The most significant advances of the Bibliographic framework initiative (Bibframe) during 2015 are described, along with the proposal for a new version of the Bibframe vocabulary (Bibframe 2.0 draft specifications), and its impact on the core classes: Item, Title and Authority. Along with this, a synopsis of presentations given about Bibframe in 2015 and early 2016 is provided in order to give an overview of the status and evolution of the projects being generated around this initiative.

Review of the concepts and technologies associated with the transition from a web of documents to a web of data. The role that public and academic libraries are playing or may play about big data, open data, and linked open data is described. The strategic importance of open data and linked open data (LOD) for the future of libraries is emphasized.

The authors have questioned how the semantic web search engines work and if the graphical display of the search results improves the retrieval. The types of queries that can be performed, as well as the main features of a semantic search engine, have been analyzed. A query was selected and executed in semantic search engines with online access to DBpedia. The basic and desirable functionality in a semantic web search engine, and reviewed studies about the evaluation of semantic search engines have been studied. Finally, there have been analyzed the graphic solutions for displaying the results of some search engines. The main findings underlines the idea that graphical solutions to display query results do not meet the expectations proposed in the bibliography.

The web of data is becoming one of the largest global information repositories, thanks to initiatives like LOD (linked open data) that facilitate the standardized publication of open data. The use of this paradigm offers great opportunities for libraries, applying semantic technologies to expedite data management and publication and promoting their connection to other repositories, increasing their presence and impact. In order to ensure the future of libraries in the Web of data, it is necessary to raise awareness among librarians about LOD opportunities and challenges. With this aim, we present the major initiatives in this area, along with the pioneering organizations in the use of linked data in the library domain.

Abstract

A review of software applications for managing digital repositories is presented. Information managers have at their disposal several alternatives beyond those that have achieved greater popularity in the area of academic repositories: DSpace and EPrints. Existing alternatives have evolved and implemented mayor improvements in their more recent versions, with the aim of adopting the latest standards for the semantic web and linked data. This paper provides a description of the new features incorporated into the latest versions of the most popular open-source products. The selection has been made using as a reference the information offered by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), Digital Curation Center (DCC), National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA), and Open Preservation Foundation. The conclusions of the study indicate that the combined use of different tools is needed to support a complete archive and digital preservation program, as no single application seems to be able to provide the features required for an effective strategy.
