Abstract

Libraries now have the challenge of managing a wide variety of materials, from books and journals on paper to the existing range of electronic resources. Information is packaged in various forms, and libraries must sign on to big deals as well as acquire single titles, single articles, open access works, ebooks, etc. Integrated library systems (ILS) are improving little by little to help in these tasks; various brands and models are cited.

Abstract

International projects for reforming and broadening the scope of the current technical guidelines and standards on thesauri are presented. The aims of these projects are to recast the existing standards and guidelines, to adapt them to the new digital environment, and to specify their relationship with other vocabulary control tools, making integration easier. These new standards are an excellent opportunity to enhance the visibility of the great corpus of knowledge and experience that information and documentation professionals have accumulated regarding knowledge representation and organization.

Abstract

Technological renewal in audio-visual production, thanks to digitalization, is replacing analog images with data files. The new model proposed by Telecinco (Spain’s TV Channel 5) is based on bringing the technology closer to the user, providing maximum flexibility in information access and information sharing, and creating a multifunctional personal environment. Information is shared without moving it from TV5’s repositories.

This document is meant to describe the status of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Annex 11 (Integrated Systems), Subtask B (Analytical Tools) effort being carried out by the Member Nations. This includes Canada, Japan, Italy (inactive at this time), the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. The Subtask status is taken as of the end of September 1997, following the Fall Experts Meeting. This was held in Toronto, September 23--26. The goal of this Annex is to identify, compile, and integrate models of hydrogen technology components into system models that will describe overall pathways. Examples would include: PV/electrolysis/pipeline transport/hydride storage/PEM fuel cell utilization or natural gas steam reforming/liquefaction/truck transport/hydrogen refueling station. Component models are developed by the Member Nations and integrated into the desired overall system. Subtask B is concerned with identifying and compiling existing component models from Member Nations, or developing these models from data supplied by the Member Nations via Subtask A. Abstract

In-vehicle systems that assist the driver with his driving task are developed and introduced to the market at increasing rate. Drivers may be supported during congested traffic conditions by a so-called Congestion Assistant consisting of a mix of informing, assisting and controlling functions. This paper describes the impacts of the Congestion Assistant on the driver in terms of driving behaviour and acceptance. Thirty-seven participants took part in a driving simulator study. The observed driving behaviour showed promising improvements in traffic safety when approaching the traffic jam. Moreover, positive effects of the system on traffic efficiency can be expected in the jam. The participants stated to appreciate the Congestion Assistant, although not all functions were equally rated.
