Abstract

The episode of the definitive assault to the City of Mallorca, on the 31st of December of 1229, is one of the best known parts of the Llibre dels feits by James the First. The words that the king employs when relating the possible miraculous intervention of Saint George in that episode have been interpreted as a sample of the prudence of the monarch in inserting wonderful elements in his chronicle. This article proposes a different interpretation of the passage, while taking into account several chronistic sources that aim towards a revision of the role that the Crusade plays in the imaginary world of king James the First.

Abstract

The program HistCite™ enables an analyst to identify significant works on a given topic using the citation links between them diachronically. However, using Scopus data for drawing historiograms with HistCite™ has hitherto been a problem. In the new version of the program CRExplorer, one can translate citation data from Scopus to WoS formats (or vice versa) and then import the data into HistCite™. In this brief communication, we demonstrate these options using the papers of Eugene Garfield (1925-2017) in Scopus for main-path analysis. The two historiograms are considerably different: unlike the WoS set, the networked connections between the time lines are sparse in the representation of the Scopus data; the secondary documents (e.g., editorials in Current Contents) not processed in Scopus, but included in WoS enrich the representation. Furthermore, HistCite™ has an option to export the citation network as a Pajek file that can be read by most network analysis and visualization programs. Garfield’s texts are centered by him as a personality and entrepreneur in different domains more than intellectually, although there are a number of recurring themes. Our own main paths are shaped along a line along which components indicate longer-term projects.

Abstract

The work analyses how of suitable are the periodizations of the history of the Catalan language with the aim to propose one that could be compatible with the social nature of what at present pretend to encase most of the histories of the language. Like this, it considers out of place the treatment of some previous period at the existence of the Catalan language, as that of the Romanization, and rebuffs some tag that is a tradition invented, as that of the Reconquest. The proposal of a periodization summarises at four stages based at sociolinguistic factors: emergence, conscience, plenitude and linguistic conflict.
