Abstract

The call for papers resulted in a high number of submis- sions, from which we have been able to select 12 excellent papers dealing with the different aspects of satellite commu- nications and navigation. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are attracting a considerable amount of attention from within the terrestrial wireless community. The first paper of this spe- cial issue, “Multisatellite MIMO communications at Ku band and above: investigations on spatial multiplexing for capac- ity improvement and selection diversity for interference mit- igation,” considers the application of such technology over a satellite platform operating in the Ku band and above. The paper considers how MIMO can be used to increase capac- ity by using a satellite spatial multiplexing system and how antenna selection can be used to mitigate interference. The next paper “Investigations in satellite MIMO channel model- ing: accent on polarization” looks at MIMO systems from the polarization diversity point of view and dwells on the satellite cooperative communication concepts. Switch and stay combining (SSC) is a form of diversity technique used in digital receivers to compensate for fade events introduced by the mobile channel. The third paper “Performance analysis of SSC diversity receivers over corre- lated Ricean fading satellite channels” investigates the per- formance of dual-branch SSC receivers for different fading channel characteristics. The next four papers deal with the emerging scenario of mobile digital video broadcasting (DVB-S2 and RCS mo- bile). Alternative approaches to counteracting fading chan- nels introduced when operating in a train environment re- ceiving satellite DVB-S2 are presented in the paper “Ad- vanced fade countermeasures for DVB-S2 systems in railway scenarios.” Here, as a result of simulation analysis, antenna diversity and packet-level forward error correction mecha- nisms are proposed and their impact is evaluated with respect to the receiver design and system complexity. The theme of DVB-S2 is continued with the paper “Capacity versus bit er- ror rate trade-off in the DVB-S2 forward link,” which inves- tigates how satellite capacity can be optimised for DVB-S2 transmissions. The DVB return channel via satellite (DVB- RCS) is then addressed in “Frequency estimation in iterative interference cancellation applied to multibeam satellite sys- tems,” which considers the application of interference cancel- lation on the reverse link of a multibeam satellite system, us- ing DVB-RCS with convolutional coding as an example. The paper “A QoS architecture for DVB-RCS next-generation satellite networks” proceeds to design and emulate a quality- of-service (QoS) architecture that demonstrates using real multimedia applications how QoS can be supported over a DVB-RCS network. 2 EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking Synchronization aspects are dealt with in “Maximum likelihood timing and carrier synchronization in burst-mode satellite transmissions.” The paper addresses the problem of achieving synchronisation for a burst-mode satellite trans- mission over an AWGN channel. The subject of burst trans- mission continues with the paper “Burst format design for optimum joint estimation of Doppler-shift and Doppler- rate in packet satellite communications,” which considers optimising the burst-format of packet-oriented transmis- sions by proposing very-low-complexity algorithms for car- rier Doppler-shift and Doppler-rate estimation. A network comprising satellite and high-altitude plat- forms is considered in the paper “TCP-call admission con- trol interaction in multiplatform space architectures.” Cross- layer techniques are implemented by means of TCP feeding back into call admission control (CAC) procedures for the purpose of prevention of congestion and improvement in QoS. Finally, since navigation is an extremely important part of the satellite system family, we have included two papers. The first paper “Efficient delay tracking methods with side- lobes cancellation for BOC-modulated signals” deals with bi- nary offset carrier (BOC) modulation, which is adopted in typical navigation systems. The paper considers how to improve the tracking of the main lobe of the BOC-modulated signal by using sidelobe suppression techniques. An alternative approach based on filter bank processing is presented in “Analysis of filter-bank-based methods for fast serial acqui- sition of BOC-modulated signals” to conclude the special issue. Abstract

It has been predicted that electric vehicles will play a crucial role in incorporating a large renewable component in the energy sector. If electric vehicles are integrated in a naive way, they may exacerbate issues related to peak demand and transmission capacity limits while not reducing polluting emissions. Optimizing the charging of electric vehicles is paramount for their successful integration. This paper presents a model to describe the driving patterns of electric vehicles in order to provide primary input information to any mathematical programming model for optimal charging. Specifically, an inhomogeneous Markov model that captures the diurnal variation in the use of a vehicle is presented. The model is defined by the time-varying probabilities of starting and ending a trip, and is justified due to the uncertainty associated with the use of the vehicle. The model is fitted to data collected from the actual utilization of a vehicle. Inhomogeneous Markov models imply a large number of parameters. The number of parameters in the proposed model is reduced using B-splines. Document type: Book

Abstract

International audience; Mapping applications onto parallel platforms is a challenging problem, even for simple application patterns such as pipeline or fork graphs. Several antagonist criteria should be optimized for workflow applications, such as throughput and latency (or a combination). In this paper, we consider a simplified model with no communication cost, and we provide an exhaustive list of complexity results for different problem instances. Pipeline or fork stages can be replicated in order to increase the throughput by sending consecutive data sets onto different processors. In some cases, stages can also be data-parallelized, i.e. the computation of one single data set is shared between several processors. This leads to a decrease of the latency and an increase of the throughput. Some instances of this simple model are shown to be NP-hard, thereby exposing the inherent complexity of the mapping problem. We provide polynomial algorithms for other problem instances. Altogether, we provide solid theoretical foundations for the study of mono-criterion or bi-criteria mapping optimization problems. Document type: Report

Abstract

Study of interactions between two consecutive layers of ATM under increased traffic.Results highlight an exponential growth in delay costs if constant network capacity.Results highlight an unmanageable controller workload if network capacity is high.We find a compromise by controlling delay costs growth with a sector capacity growth.We quantify research objectives for future work on air traffic control optimization. Air traffic in Europe is predicted to increase considerably over the next decades. In this context, we present a study of the interactions between the costs due to ground-holding regulations and the costs due to en-route air traffic control. We dulator that considers the regulation delays, aircraft trajectories, and air conflict resolution. Through intensive simulations based on traffic forecasts extrapolated from French traffic data for 2012, we compute the regulation delays and avoidance maneuvers according to two scenarios: the current regulations and no regulations. The resulting cost analysis highlights the exponential growth in regulation costs that can be expected if the procedures and the airspace capacity do not change. Compared to the delay costs, the costs of the air traffic control are negligible with or without regulation. The analysis reveals the heavy controller workloads when there are no regulations, suggesting the need for regulations that are appropriate for large traffic volumes and an improved ATC system. These observations motivate the design of a third scenario that computes the sector capacities to find a compromise between the increase in the delay costs due to ground-holding regulations and the increase in the controller workload. The results reveal the sensitivity of the delay costs to the sector capacity; this information will be useful for further research into ATM sector capacity and ATC automated tool design. Finally, because of the growing interest in the free flight paradigm, we also perform a traffic and cost analysis for aircraft following direct routes. The results obtained highlight the fuel and time savings and the spatial restrictions that companies use to avoid congested areas. Document type: Article

Abstract

Daily traffic congestions form major problems for businesses such as logistical service providers and distribution firms. They cause late arrivals at customers and additional hiring costs for the truck drivers. The additional costs of traffic congestions can be reduced by taking into account and avoid well-predictable traffic congestions within off-line vehicle route plans. In the literature, various strategies are proposed to avoid traffic congestions, such as selecting alternative routes, changing the customer visit sequences, and changing the vehicle-customer assignments. We investigate the impact of these and other congestion avoidance strategies in off-line vehicle route plans on the performance of these plans in reality. For this purpose, we develop a set of VRP instances on real road networks, and a speed model that inhabits the main characteristics of peak hour congestion. The instances are solved for different levels of congestion avoidance using a modified Dijkstra algorithm and a restricted dynamic programming heuristic. Computational experiments show that 99% of late arrivals at customers can be eliminated if traffic congestions are accounted for off-line. On top of that, almost 70% of the extra duty times caused by the traffic congestions can be eliminated by clever avoidance strategies.

Abstract

This paper presents a method to find the optimal configuration for an electric vehicle energy storage system using a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverter. CHB multilevel inverters enable a better utilization of the battery pack, because cells/modules with manufacturing tolerances in terms of capacity can be selectively discharged instead of being passively balanced by discharging them over resistors. The balancing algorithms have been investigated in many studies for the CHB topology. However, it has not yet been investigated to which extend a conventional pack can be modularized in a CHB configuration. Therefore, this paper explores different configurations by simulating different switch models, switch configurations, and number of levels for a CHB inverter along with a reference load model to find the optimal design of the system. The configuration is also considered from an economically point of view, as the most efficient solution might not be cost-effective to be installed in a common production vehicle. It is found that four modules per phase give the best compromise between efficiency and costs. Paralleling smaller switches should be preferred over the usage of fewer, larger switches. Moreover, selecting specific existing components results in higher savings compared to theoretical optimal components. Document type: Article

Abstract

We study the problem of routing traffic through a congested network. We focus on the simplest case of a network consisting of m parallel links. We assume a collection of n network users each user employs a mixed strategy, which is a probability distribution over links, to control the shipping of its own assigned traffic. Given a capacity for each link specifying the rate at which the link processes traffic, the objective is to route traffic so that the maximum (over all links) latency is minimized. We consider both uniform and arbitrary link capacities. How much decrease in global performace is necessary due to the absence of some central authority to regulate network traffic and implement an optimal assignment of traffic to links? We investigate this fundamental question in the context of Nash equilibria for such a system, where each network user selfishly routes its traffic only on those links available to it that minimize its expected latency cost, given the network congestion caused by the other users. We use the Coordination Ratio, originally defined by Koutsoupias and Papadimitriou, as a measure of the cost of lack of coordination among the users roughly speaking, the Coordination Ratio is the ratio of the expectation of the maximum (over all links) latency in the worst possible Nash equilibrium, over the least possible maximum latency had global regulation been available. Our chief instrument is a set of combinatorial Minimum Expected Latency Cost Equations, one per user, that characterize the Nash equilibria of this system. These are linear equations in the minimum expected latency costs, involving the user traffics, the link capacities, and the routing pattern determined by the mixed strategies. In turn, we solve these equations in the case of fully mixed strategies, where each user assigns its traffic with a strictly positive probability to every link, to derive the first existence and uniqueness results for fully mixed Nash equilibria in this setting. Through a thorough analysis and characterization of fully mixed Nash equilibria, we obtain tight upper bounds of no worse than O(ln n/ln ln n) on the Coordination Ratio for (i) the case of uniform capacities and arbitrary traffics and (ii) the case of arbitrary capacities and identical traffics. © Springer 2007. 48 1 91 126 "p"Cited By :41

Abstract

The turnaround process constitutes an important part of the air transportation system. Airports often represent bottlenecks in air traffic management (ATM), thus operations related to the preparation of the aircraft for the next flight leg have to be executed smoothly and in a timely manner. The ATM significantly depends on a reliable turnaround process. Future paradigm changes with respect to airplane energy sources, aircraft design or propulsion concepts will also influence the airport layout. As a consequence, operational processes associated with the turnaround will be affected. Airlines aim for efficient and timely turnaround operations that are correlated with higher profits. This case study discusses an approach to investigate a new aircraft design with respect to the implications on the turnaround. The boarding process, as part of the turnaround, serves as an example to evaluate the consequences of new design concepts. This study is part of an interdisciplinary research to investigate future energy, propulsion and designs concepts and their implications on the whole ATM system. Due to these new concepts, several processes of the turnaround will be affected. For example, new energy storage concepts will influence the fueling process on the aircraft itself or might lead to a new infrastructure at the airport. This paper aims to evaluate the applied methodology in the case of a new boarding process, due to a new aircraft design, by means of a generic example. An agent-based boarding simulation is applied to assess passenger behavior during boarding, particularly with regard to cabin layout and seat configuration. The results of the generic boarding simulation are integrated into a simplified, deterministic and generic simulation of the turnaround process. This was done to assess the proposed framework for future investigations which on the one hand address the ATM system holistically and on the other, incorporate additional or adapted processes of the turnaround. Abstract

The quest towards increasing the energy density of traction battery technologies has led to the emergence and diversification of battery materials. The lithium sulfur battery (LSB) is in this regard a promising material for batteries due to its specific energy. However, due to its low volumetric energy density, the LSB faces challenges in mobility applications such as electric vehicles but also other transportation modes. To understand the potential environmental implication of LSB batteries, a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed. For this study, electrodes for both an NMC111 with an anode graphite and a LSB battery cell with a lithium metal foil as anode were manufactured. Data from disassembly experiments performed on a real battery system for a mid-size passenger vehicle were used to build the required life cycle inventory. The energy consumption during the use phase was calculated using a simulative approach. A set of thirteen impact categories was evaluated and characterized with the ReCiPe methodology. The results of the LCA in this study allow identification of the main sources of environmental problems as well as possible strategies to improve the environmental impact of LSB batteries. In this regard, the high requirements of N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) for the processing of the sulfur cathode and the thickness of the lithium foil were identified as the most important drivers. We make recommendations for necessary further research in order to broaden the understanding concerning the potential environmental implication of the implementation of LSB batteries for mobility applications. Abstract

It is always a strong motivation for aeronautic researchers and engineers to reduce the aircraft emissions or even to achieve emission-free air transport. In this paper, the impacts of different game-changing technologies together on the reduction of aircraft fuel consumption and emissions are studied. In particular, a general tool has been developed for the technology assessment, integration and also for the overall aircraft multidisciplinary design optimization. The validity and robustness of the tool has been verified through comparative and sensitivity studies. The overall aircraft level technology assessment and optimization showed that promising fuel efficiency improvements are possible. Though, additional strategies are required to reach the aviation emission reduction goals for short and medium range configurations. Document type: Article
