Abstract

The digital media has proven successful with a specific type of information which is of great interest to those readers, accustomed to using diverse technology that furnishes them with the news on a variety of platforms: internet newspapers, information on social networks, informative documents on video, etc. This article studies how the blogs have created their own niche among the readers of digital press and how they have been incorporated into the digital newspapers to the point where they now have their own section. A special study is also made of the main Spanish digital daily papers.

Abstract

The photo galleries in four Spanish digital journals --El mundo, La vanguardia, Sur and La voz de Galiciawere analysed in January 2010. A model was designed with indicators to examine the topics, configuration and informative value of the galleries. The study included the quantitative importance of the galleries, their increasing specialization and heterogeneous design, access and functionality. The conclusions are: the galleries are abundant, have good visibility and present a great variety of themes. The lack of standardized labeling of links, redundant access and little magnification of the images are significant drawbacks. There should be more informative contextualization of the photos, enhancing the hypertext linkage between the galleries and information pages to which they refer.

Abstract

A study of the impact and influence of Digital Photography on the Press Documentation Departments. The photographic archives of the Documentation Departments of the Spanish daily newspapers Abc, El mundo, El país, La razón, La vanguardia and of the EFE news agency are used as reference. The following aspects are analysed: the increase in the number of images, changes in their handling and cataloging, the supply and the demand, profitability and problems. The information has been obtained from the heads of the respective departments based on a questionnaire especially drawn up for this purpose.

Abstract

The circulation of newspapers that have both a “paper version” and a “free digital” version is analysed to determine whether there is a relationship between the two kinds of circulation. If there is an existing relationship we want to know how it works, what the overall effects are, and if these effects create some form of “cannibalization”. We studied the leading “free digital” publications in Spain for general information (El mundo), sports (Marca), and economics (Expansión). Sources for extracting data are Introl, OJD and OJD Interactiva. Data analysis was based on a descriptive statistics methodology and monthly series over 10 years, starting in June 1998, the first available date for electronic editions of these three newspapapers. The last month analysed is December 2008 because OJD Interactiva modified its measurement methods in January 2009 and this change could have affected the study results.

Abstract

Thirteen redesigns of the top five Spanish daily newspapers (general information) during the 21st century (ABC, El país, El mundo del siglo XXI, La vanguardia, and 20 minutos) are analyzed. We try to establish the possible relationship between the crisis of print journalism and changes in design. Trends found are classified into 17 categories of changes. The results are surprising: One redesign occurs every 15 months; some newspapers only wait two years to introduce modifications; elements as sensitive as the header are affected in 62% of the cases; and redesigns of other newspapers do not seem to influence each other. Unlike what one might expect, design is not always used as a sales promotion strategy. Starting in 2008, redesigns did not boost sales. The highest frequency of changes has occurred since 2008, the year the global economic crisis began. The research is of a descriptive type (non-experimental, case study, longitudinal, and comparative design), although it suggests possible relationships among variables that should be checked with combined techniques.

Abstract

Suicide has traditionally been silenced by media, following experts recommendations pointing to a possible induction of imitative behaviour in the population. However, this position has recently changed and psychologists and psychiatrists, in addition to the World Health Organization (WHO), request the media to rise awareness about this serious social problem aiming to fight it. Every year, more than 800,000 people commit suicide in the world, which means that one person dies every 40 seconds. Therefore, we depart from a new and apparently agreed upon approach: we must inform. This position being accepted, it is very important to define the limits and the terms. Bibliography on this topic is scarce, only existing one self-regulation reference written by health professionals and journalists in Spain (2018). The aim of this research is to analyze the information on suicide published on the first five months of 2019 by the two main general newspapers in Spain by applying the Code of Ethics on the Treatment of Suicide in the Media promoted by the Association of Journalists of the Balearic Islands. The results show an improvable practice as well as concurring errors remediable to satisfy the demands of organizations, family members and victims by means of responsible and useful journalism.
