Abstract

Audiovisual content has become a major leisure option in our society, and Internet has transformed its consumption patterns and market population. Identifying the websites that support this type of leisure activity is not a simple task. With data obtained from Alexa.com, it is possible to quantify the ecosystem of websites that provide links to audiovisual content in Spain.

Abstract

The peg of this report is the 14th edition of the International Society for Informetrics and Scientometrics (ISSI) Conference, which was held in Vienna in 2013 and was by far the biggest event in this field. Based on this conference the author discusses the hottest and most controversial topics, which bibliometricians and scientometricians will have to face within the next years and even beyond. These are, amongst others, the adjustment of the peer review process to the challenges of the digital era, the crucial role of research data, the rise and necessity of new metrics, as well as the reconsideration of our proxys. Furthermore it is pointed out to which degree all these novel possibilities in the dissemination and promotion of research output will inevitably influence the role of future scientists. Finally, a short reflection on the scientometric community during this crucial period of change is given.

La introducción generalizada de Internet de banda ancha ha transformado la forma tradicional de ver series de TV y películas. Más allá de los servicios legales hay un ecosistema ampliamente establecido que permite el acceso no autorizado a material con copyright; un ecosistema que en España representa un canal paralelo de consumo de contenidos. Hemos analizado los sitios web de los principales proveedores de enlaces en España durante un año, a partir de la entrada en vigor el 1 de enero 2015 del Texto Refundido de la Ley de propiedad intelectual (Trlpi). Nuestro análisis revela cómo el ecosistema ha alterado el equilibrio de este ecosistema y finamente se ha reorganizado. Sin embargo, en contraste con el objetivo de las medidas propuestas por la Trlpi, la nueva legislación no ha conducido a una reducción en el tamaño del ecosistema de la piratería en España. AbstractThe widespread introduction of broadband Internet has transformed the traditional way of watching TV series and films. Beyond the legal services there is a widely established ecosystem that provides unauthorized access to copyrighted material; an ecosystem which, in Spain, represents a parallel channel on which to view content. We have analyzed the leading link provider websites in Spain over a period of one year, since enforcement on January 1, 2015 of the Revised Text of the Intellectual property act (Trlpi). Our analysis reveals how the ecosystem has been reorganized and its balance altered. However, in contrast to the objective of the measures proposed by the Trlpi, the new legislation has not led to a reduction in the size of the piracy ecosystem in Spain. 

Abstract

The evolution of the use of electronic scientific journals in the 2007-2018 period by the academic communities of the public universities of Castilla and Leon, members the Bucle consortium, is studied. Downloads of articles distributed by four broad-spectrum providers are analyzed: Emerald, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Wiley. Unexpectedly, in spite of the new ways of accessing content, this analysis shows that the number of downloads in public universities in Castile and Leon has increased. However, it has been found that despite the growth, a few journals concentrate most of the downloads and that a large number of titles are not used. It has been verified that the universities with a higher number of staff and greater diversity of knowledge areas use a wider range of titles and thus obtain a higher benefit from their contracts. All of the above leads us to question the system of contracting big deals, i.e., bundles of hundreds of multidisciplinary journals and other resources. In a moment of change promoted by Plan S, we consider it more necessary than ever to understand the situation of the provision of serial scientific publications and to find the best strategy to have access to them.
