Abstract

The effective deployment of the semantic web depends not just on technological developments, but also on applying guidelines for the process of publishing structured data on the Web. Part of the work of the W3C working group about data on the Web is focused on the identification of best practices and defining vocabularies to represent datasets. The maturity of the semantic web is reflected in the increasing importance of aspects related to the use of published data, types of licenses, trust, publication dynamics, and data reusing, among other processes.

Abstract

The technologies of the semantic web have reached a high degree of development. There are hundreds of metadata schemes and ontologies and thousands of datasets available for public use. The next step is to improve access, reuse and trust on datasets. This article includes vocabularies for describing datasets (DCAT) and their provenance (PROV-O), specifying mechanisms for access and use of data (DUV), and defining quality indicators (DQV).

Abstract

The web of data is becoming one of the largest global information repositories, thanks to initiatives like LOD (linked open data) that facilitate the standardized publication of open data. The use of this paradigm offers great opportunities for libraries, applying semantic technologies to expedite data management and publication and promoting their connection to other repositories, increasing their presence and impact. In order to ensure the future of libraries in the Web of data, it is necessary to raise awareness among librarians about LOD opportunities and challenges. With this aim, we present the major initiatives in this area, along with the pioneering organizations in the use of linked data in the library domain.

Abstract

Smart cities are service providers as well as sources of public data. The reuse of cities’ data through the application of technology enables the creation of innovative services for citizens. Apps, developed by reusing information, are considered a key indicator for the creation of services. This paper explores the main characteristics of these apps and their relationship to services. The analysis performed in the main smart cities in Europe shows the importance of timely information release and the geo-location of published data. Transport and tourism seem to be the most popular areas of application. This article builds on the area of research in previous studies and includes additional information of apps’ characteristics to meet service needs.

Abstract

The situation of access to public sector information and its reuse in Spanish regions is analyzed. For this purpose, it was used Meloda, a metric to assess open data reuse published on open data portals. Furthermore, the correlation between the number of datasets available on open data portals, the International Transparency Index of Spanish regions, and the Meloda average for each Spanish region are studied. 2,165 datasets have been examined. 95.15% of data published by Spanish regions on open data portals is optimum for reuse, or suitable for reuse but with some improvement needed. The public bodies which are leading this process are those of Aragón, Cataluña, Comunidad Foral de Navarra and País Vasco.

Abstract

This literature review describes web indicators for the impact of books, software, datasets, videos and other non-standard academic outputs. Although journal articles dominate academic research in the health and natural sciences, other types of outputs can make equally valuable contributions to scholarship and are more common in other fields. It is not always possible to get useful citation-based impact indicators for these due to their absence from, or incomplete coverage in, traditional citation indexes. In this context, the web is particularly valuable as a potential source of impact indicators for non-standard academic outputs. The main focus in this review is on books because of the much greater amount of relevant research for them and because they are regarded as particularly valuable in the arts and humanities and in some areas of the social sciences.
