Abstract

The semantic web has enough critical mass to expand its technological scope to content management systems (cms). Currently, an increase in the application of interoperable standards to publish large datasets is detected. Rdf, owl and sparql are replacing traditional developments based on relational database management systems for management and storage of information. Cms are beginning to use these technologies to publish content with semantic web formats, and to define mappings with elements of rdf vocabularies. In this regard, Cms also incorporate features to add semantic information into the xhtml code using rdfa and applying sparql to query data or incorporate external data.

The use of content management systems for web publishing, the emergence of new approaches such as web experience management and the integration of web productivity components are analyzed.

A general overview of the different semantic markup formats and the existing technologies to incorporate explicit semantic information (microformats, microdata and RDFa) is provided. Services are described that automate, to some extent, semantic annotation processes (Sindice, Calais, AlchemyAPI and DBPedia Spotlight), while characterizing the complete cycle of this process in a particular CMS (Wordpress) using a specialized plugin (RDFaCE-Lite). Finally, in order to quantify the creation and connectivity of semantically marked content on the Web, the space formed by all Spanish universities (and a selection of 25 international institutions) is analysed with Sindice . Semantic page count and visibility indicators (inlinks, outlinks, internal and third party) are calculated for the sample. The results indicate limited presence of semantically marked content in the universities and highly isolated web visibility of this content.

Abstract

We present partial results of a comparative analysis in three major commercial broadcasters in Spain -Cadena Ser, Onda Cero and Cope - to identify and analyze the structure of the departments responsible for content management, as well as the model and management tools used. The study applies a case methodology and takes a functional perspective, that is, a business model based on the core business of each company, i.e., informational, cultural, or entertainment content. For the second phase of the analysis, we conducted in-depth interviews with the heads of the executive team of each broadcasting company.

Abstract

In 2011, Spain’s public radio network, Radio Nacional de España, introduced a new content management system for its documentary archive, called ARCA. This new system allows those in charge of radio programs direct access to documentary content, and places documentalists at the center of the production process. In this article, the impact of the ARCA system on the professional routines of program production is analyzed. The article describes the typology of documentary archive content that can be used to improve programming quality, both in conventional broadcasting and in parallel broadcasting of added value on the radio web. Finally, the new system is analyzed, keeping in mind public radio’s role in maintaining the documentary and sound archive of the Spanish State and its autonomic territorial organization.

Abstract

Content management systems (CMS) let us automate the generation, management, and retrieval of digital information, giving us the ability to deliver the right content to the right people at the right time at the right cost. This article analyzes the concept of CMS, its evolution from the 1970s to the open source tools developed since 2000, and its relationship to other systems, such as document management, records management or enterprise content management. Finally, a set of basic functions is detailed, along with practical advice to help determine the best CMS to meet the specific needs of any particular information service.

Abstract

User-generated content management poses a challenge to the media. It requires professional handling in order to facilitate user engagement and avoid verbal aggression. To illustrate this point, the article examines the comments posted to the online edition of Marca, the major Spanish sports newspaper. Empirical assessments of the data alongside interviews with the people in charge of the service were utilized. The analysis of the automatic filters, the Moderation Technology Platform (MTP), as well as the human filters comprehensively shows the itinerary through the system of every posted message. The study reflects on the best strategies to improve the quality of the online discussion. Results: The user history and the vocabulary blacklist seem to be the fundamental tools for moderating user comments. Marca removes 40% of the comments received. In practice, it has been observed that the percentage of inappropriate posts increases with the total number of posts sent by each reader: for 2 posts the rejection rate may be 14%, but for 9 it can reach 33%. One key issue to improve the quality of comments is the involvement of journalists in the conversations.

Abstract

Research in the humanities increasingly depends on how information is structured and managed and how, on the basis of that information, new knowledge is produced. Additionally, participatory approaches, which often rely on web information systems as their supportive infrastructure, have made an impact on the most recent historiographical trends, in particular in the methodological framework of digital humanities. The aim of this paper was to produce, from an operational and implementation perspective, a review of software solutions frequently used to develop web information systems for research projects in humanities and cultural heritage, in order to provide an understanding of the various possibilities available and their positives and limitations, also based on different users’ requirements. An individual and comparative analysis of sixteen different application frameworks commonly used in these fields, either generic or developed for a specific research domain, has been carried out, considering their main functionalities, strengths, and weaknesses. The achieved results facilitate critical and reasoned decision-making among several available options, guiding the makers of those systems, both researcher(s) and developers(s), and providing them also with a common ground of terms and use cases to facilitate their necessary dialogue.
