Abstract

In 2016, the first Spanish libraries will begin using RDA cataloging rules (Resource Description and Access), replacing AACR2. This note article explains that RDA should be viewed as a confluence of three trends: savings, sharing, and developing technology. The objectives of the catalogs (to find a known work, to find works by the same author or subject, and to provide relationships between authors or entities) are explained. A brief historical review of AACR, MARC format, ISBD, FRBR, and Bibframe, is made, finally, to explain the RDA rules.

Abstract

Opac has been in the eye of the hurricane for a number of years, evolving to provide management programs with more functionality in terms of accessibility, understood as the capacity to recover information. It is logical to imagine that this has been for the user’s benefit, but a thorough analysis reveals that the Opacs have deficiencies in that arena. They must be truly open to the user, as the backbone of information access, bibliographically or otherwise, so the user participates in his or her own growth and enrichment. Some of the weaknesses in the great majority of current catalogues are discussed, offering some paths toward the intersection between technological innovations that could be introduced and the social participation that could occur under the umbrella of the currently popular Web 2.0.

Abstract

Digital humanities researchers experience some difficulties in accessing and using computational tools which are meant to assist them when carrying out queries of texts analysis in their studies. This is due to the fact that information concerning tools in this field and their effective usage is not linked to the information about their location and utilization. Clarin IULA-UPF Center aims at compiling and relating required information in a catalogue of linked data in order to offer researchers an integrated way of accessing it. This article presents details about the design and selection of the materials and description tools included in the catalogue.
