Abstract

A one dimensional model of the thermo-elastohydrodynamic line contact problem is numerically solved using the finite element method. The resulting highly nonlinear system of equations is simultaneously solved employing Newton s method. The solution involves the domain determination which is a priori unknown. The technique which includes the use of an adaptive discretization, proves to be effective to resolve the huge pressure and temperature gradients that are present. The predictions obtained disagree with previous published results, thus further numerical and experimental analysis should be performed.
