Abstract

This article presents a unified corotational kinematics of deformable bar elements that can be represented as plane truss, spatial truss or 2D beam elements. The corotational kinematics is based on the separation of the motion on deformationaland rigid body components. For the case of translations and rotations, determined by a single angular parameter, the deformational motions are expressible in closed form. It is demonstrated that the determination of the deformational motions are based on a unique vectorial expression independent on the bar element used. In addition, the element internal force and consistent tangent stiffness matrix are derived by taking variations of the internal energy with respect to nodal freedoms.
