• A temperature‐based formulation for finite element analysis of generalized phase‐change problems

  Abstract

  A finite element formulation for solving multidimensional phase-change problems is presented. The formulation considers the temperature as the unique state variable, it is conservative in the weak form sense and it preserves the moving interface condition. In this work, a consistent Jacobian matrix that ensures numerical convergence and stability is derived. Also, a comparative analysis with other different phase-change finite element techniques is performed. Finally, two numerical examples are analyzed in order to show the performance of the proposed methodology.

  Abstract

  This work presents a new methodology base on the use adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques in the context of shape optimization problems analyzed by the Finite Element Method. A suitable and very general technique for the parametrization of the optimization problem using B-splines to define the boundary is first presented. Then, mesh generation using the advancing front method, the estimation of error and the mesh refinement criterion are studied in the context of shape optimization problems. In particular, the sensitivities of the different ingredients ruling the problem (B-splines, finite element mesh, flow behavior, and error estimator) are studied in detail. The sensitivities of the finite element mesh and the error estimator allow their projection from one design to the next, thus leading to an “a priori knowledge” of the error distribution on the new design without the need of any additional analysis. This information allows to build up a finite element mesh for the new design with a specified and controlled level error. The robustness and reliability of the proposed methodology is checked out with some 2D application examples.

  Abstract

  This work presents a methodology based on the use of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) techniques in the context of shape optimization problems analyzed by the Finite Element Method (FEM). A suitable and very general technique for the parametrization of the optimization problem using B-splines to define the boundary is first presented.   Abstract

  A general methodology for deriving thin plate bending elements with a single degree of freedom per node is presented. The formulation is based on the combination of a standard C₀ finite element interpolation for the deflection field with an independent approximation of the curvatures which are expressed in terms of the deflection gradient along the sides using a finite volume-like approach. The formulation is particularized for the simplest element of the family, i.e. the three node triangle with three degrees of freedom. The potential of the new element is shown through different examples of application.

  Abstract

  A new plate triangle based on Reissner–Mindlin plate theory is proposed. The element has a standard linear deflection field and an incompatible linear rotation field expressed in terms of the mid‐side rotations. Locking is avoided by introducing an assumed linear shear strain field based on the tangential shear strains at the mid‐sides. The element is free of spurious modes, satisfies the patch test and behaves correctly for thick and thin plate and shell situations. The element degenerates in an explicit manner to a simple discrete Kirchhoff form.

• Utilisation de maillages adaptatifs dans un processus d'optimisation de formes en aérodynamique

  Abstract

  L’objet de ce rapport est de presenter l’approche choise par le CIMNE afin d’optimiser des forms, dans le cadre des équations du potentiel incompressible portant. Plus précisément, nous nous intéresserons ici à étudier l’influence de la partie “maillage adaptatif” sur la convergence globale d’un problème d’optimisation de formes. Les formes à optimiser sont des profils d’ailes d’avions (dimension 2). L’approche retenue utilice paramétrisation des formes considérées par des B-splines. Chaque domaine de calcul est alors discrétisé à l’aide d’un algorithme de maillage classique appelé méthode frontale avancée. Afin de definir à l’avance la taille des éléments de la d’erreur pour la solution des équations du potentiel incompressible (c’est l’influence de la précision requise pour cet estimateur, sur la convergence globale du processus, que nous étudierons). Enfin, on écrit le problème de reconstruction sous la forme d’un problème de minimisation, résolu par une méthode de quasi-Newton où le gradient de la fonctionnelle à minimiser est calculé exactement.

  En este trabajo se presenta la evaluación de varios elementos basados en la teoría de láminas desarrollada por Simó y colaboradores [1-5]. Se ha implementado una versión simplificada del elemento de cuatro nodos y varios elementos triangulares. Los estudios se refieren principalmente al comportamiento no lineal geométrico dentro de una formulación lagrangeana total.   Abstract

  En este trabajo se realiza inicialmente un resumen teórico de las teorías de láminas y vigas desarrolladas por Simo y colaboradores [2-6,12-15]. Luego se presentan un elemento cuadrilátero y 4 elementos triangulares adecuados para el análisis no lineal geométrico y material en régimen dinámico. Se presentan también un elemento de viga y se propone un criterio de fluencia en esfuerzos generalizados. Se muestran algunos ejemplos del comportamiento de los elementos y la teoría subyacente, incluyendo problemas de contacto entre cuerpos deformables. Finalmente se presentan una metodología para la compatibilización de desplazamientos entre elementos de láminas, vigas y sólidos que permita el análisis de estructuras compuestas sin necesidad de elementos transición entre diferentes elementos y maneje rigidizadores excéntricos.

  Abstract

  The numerical simulation of hot rolling forming processes is very important for the metallurgic industry. This is an efficient and economic tool to simulate the rolling process and to predict the evolution of some parameters like the velocity field, temperatures, strains, stresses and rolling forces. In this way, computer simulations are becoming a necessary tool in the design and optimization of hot rolling processes [2,3,4,5,21,25,26,27]. In this publication an incompressible flow based formulation to simulate hot rolling processes is presented. First, some theorical aspects about the process are shown as well as numerical solution using the finite element method. Finally, some numerical examples are presented.

  Abstract

  Dentro de todos los procesos denominados “Rapid Prototyping”, se presenta en esta publicación el denominado estereolitografía. Estos procesos cuyo origen se remontan a fines de la década de los ochenta, poseen un gran interés por parte de las industrias, dado que posibilitan a la fabricación de piezas en tiempos muy inferiores a los obtenidos por los métodos tradicionales y una gran versatilidad en cuanto a materiales y formas utilizadas. Las máquinas actualmente existentes en el mercado generan de forma automática la pieza a partir de su representación geométrica en un ordenador. El modelado numérico del proceso se justifica por la necesidad de poder predecir la geometría final de la pieza con el objeto de realimentar el proceso variando los parámetros de control, con el fin de obtener la pieza deseada con la mayor precisión posible. En esta publicación se presenta un resumen de las posibilidades del programa “SLAP” desarrollado en el CIMNE (Centro Internacional de Métodos Numéricos en Ingeniería) para simular mediante el método de los Elementos Finitos procesos de fabricación de prototipos por estereolitografía. Asimismo, se presentan las instrucciones para la utilización práctica del programa y algunos ejemplos de aplicación.
