The iterative solution of linear systems arising from panel method discretization of three‐dimensional (3D) exterior potential problems coming mainly from aero‐hydrodynamic engineering problems, is discussed. An original preconditioning based on an approximate eigenspace decomposition is proposed, which corrects bad conditioning arising from a pair of surfaces that are very close to each other, which is a very common situation in slender wings and other aerodynamic profiles. This preconditioning has been tested with the standard Bi‐conjugate gradient (Bi‐CG) and conjugate gradient squared (CGS) iterative methods.

Abstract

The numerical simulation of modern engineering problems via finite elements requires the solution of sparse linear systems of millions or even billions of unknowns. The algebraic multigrid (AMG) methods are the most common choice as linear solvers because of their fast convergence even for large-size problems. In this communication, we propose Chronos, a massively parallel implementation of a novel AMG framework, specifically designed to address complex problems by adapting its components, from the smoother, to the coarse grid correction and prolongation to the problem at hand. This work demonstrates not only the numerical performance of the proposed library, but also its robustness and adaptability to very challenging matrices, arising from different fields of application.

Abstract

Addresses two difficulties which arise when using a compressible code with equal order interpolation (non‐staggered grids in the finite‐difference nomenclature) to capture a steady‐state solution in the incompressible limit, i.e. at low Mach numbers. Explains that, first, numerical instabilities in the form of spurious oscillations in pressure pollute the solution and, second, the convergence to the steady state becomes extremely slow owing to bad conditioning of the different speeds of propagation. By using a stabilized method, allows the use of equal‐order interpolations in a consistent (weighted‐residual) formulation which stabilizes both the convection and the continuity terms at the same time. On the other hand, by using specially devised preconditioning, assures a rate of convergence independent of Mach number.
