Abstract

A reduction of environmental burdens is currently required. In particular, proposing a new approach for the construction of a smart city using renewable energy is important. The technological development of a smart city is founded building equipment and infrastructure. However, planning methods and their techniques using the collaboration approach with residents are only just developing. This study aimed to develop a support tool for the construction of a smart city using renewable energy while facilitating consensus-building efforts among residents using the method for a cooperative housing development. We organized the supporting methods for the construction of residential area using the cooperative method. Then, we developed supporting tools that interface the computer with these methods. We examined the support techniques for the construction of a residential area using renewable energy technology by analyzing Japanese cases of a smart city. Moreover, we developed a support tool for the construction of a smart city on a trial basis. We integrated the smart city construction tools and the cooperative housing construction support tool. This tool has a 3D modeling system that helps residents to easily understand the space image as a result of the examination. We also developed a professional supporting tool that residents can consider for cost-effectiveness in renewable energy and its environmental load reduction rate for the planning of a smart city.

Abstract

Air pollution in one of the main problems that big cities have nowadays. Traffic congestion, heaters, industrial activities, among others produce large quantities of Particulate Matter (PM) that have harmful effects on citizens’ health. This paper presents the design, development and initial validation of a wearable device for the detection of PM concentration, with communication capacity via WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy and an end user interface. The results are promising due to the high accuracy of measurements collected by the developed device. This solution is a step forward in empowering citizens to prevent being exposed to high levels of air pollution and is the beginning of what could be a macro-network of air quality sensors within a Smart City. Abstract

Data is growing at an alarming rate. This growth is spurred by varied array of sources, such as embedded sensors, social media sites, video cameras, the quantified-self and the internet-of-things. This is changing our reliance on data for making decisions, or data analytics, from being mostly carried out by an individual and in limited settings to taking place while on-the-move and in the field of action. Unlocking value from data directs that it must be assessed from multiple dimensions. Data’s value can be primarily classified as “information,” “knowledge” or “wisdom”. Data analytics addresses such matters as what and why, as well as what will and what should be done. In recent days, data analytics is moving from being reserved for domain experts to becoming necessary for the end-user. However, data availability is both a pertinent issue and a great opportunity for global businesses. This paper presents recent examples from work in our research team on ubiquitous data analytics and open up to a discussion on key questions relating methodologies, tools and frameworks to improve ubiquitous data team effectiveness as well as the potential goals for a ubiquitous data process methodology. Finally, we give an outlook on the future of data analytics, suggesting a few research topics, applications, opportunities and challenges. Abstract

International audience; Urban transportation of next decade is expected to be disrupted by Autonomous Mobility on Demand (AMoD): AMoD providers will collect ride requests from users and will dispatch a fleet of autonomous vehicles to satisfy requests in the most efficient way. Differently from current ride sharing systems, in which driver behavior has a clear impact on the system, AMoD systems will be exclusively determined by the dispatching logic. As a consequence, a recent interest in the Operations Research and Computer Science communities has focused on this control logic. The new propositions and methodologies are generally evaluated via simulation. Unfortunately, there is no simulation platform that has emerged as reference, with the consequence that each author uses her own custom-made simulator, applicable only in her specific study, with no aim of generalization and without public release. This slows down the progress in the area as researchers cannot build on each other’s work and cannot share, reproduce and verify the results. The goal of this paper is to present AMoDSim, an open-source simulation platform aimed to fill this gap and accelerate research in future ride sharing system

Abstract

Part 2: Open and Smart Government; International audience; Smart cities focus on using existing resources in a better way to improve the urban environment. At the same time Big and Open Linked Data (BOLD) can be used to better understand the use of the resources and to suggest improvements. The objective of this paper is to investigate the complementariness of the smart cities and big and Open Data research streams. Two inductive cases concerning different aspects of smart cities, energy and mobility, are investigated. The idea of using BOLD for smart cities seems initially straightforward, but the cases show that this is complex. A taxonomy for forms of collecting and opening data is derived. A major challenge is to deal with data distributed over various data sources and how to align the data push with the citizens’ needs. This paper highlights a continuous scale between open and closed data and emphasizes that not only Open Data but also closed data should be used to identify improvements. BOLD can contribute to the ‘smartness’ of cities by linking and combining data or employing data or predictive analytics to improve better use of resources. A smart city only becomes smart when there are smart citizens, businesses, civil servants and other stakeholders. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

Thesis presented as partial requirement for obtaining the master’s degree in Information Management with specialization in Information Systems and Technologies Management The urbanization phenomenon brings great challenges to the cities and smart city's initiatives, for example smart mobility solutions, are being put in place as a strategy to mitigate the effects. With this study we intend to disclosure the current situation of the metropolitan area of Lisbon regarding smart mobility and multimodal mobility systems: with the development of the present work we gathered examples of smart passenger transport and multimodal solutions, acknowledge the level to which the citizens of the metropolitan area are aware of these solutions and committed to incorporate it in their daily lives and understood how the metropolitan area of Lisbon compares to other European cities regarding smart mobility theme. The methodology adopted was the analysis of an existent European dataset related to the preferences of the European citizens on emerging technology-based passenger transport solutions and the development of a survey custom made to the citizens of the metropolitan area of Lisbon. The results demonstrated the citizens of the metropolitan area of Lisbon are highly unhappy with the available mobility systems and use mainly the private car as transport mode and the importance of multimodal mobility systems were confirmed. O fenómeno da urbanização traz grandes desafios às cidades e as iniciativas de cidades inteligentes, das quais fazem parte as soluções mobilidade inteligente, estão a ser utilizadas como estratégias para mitigar os efeitos deste fenómeno. Com este estudo pretendemos apresentar a situaçã atual da área metropolitana de Lisboa relativamente a mobilidade inteligente e a sistemas de mobilidde multimodal: no decorrer do estudo foram reunidos vários exemplos de soluções inteligentes de transporte de passageiros, foi avaliado o nível de conhecimento dos cidadãos acerca deste tipo de soluções e a sua disponibilidade e compromisso de adopção das mesmas no seu dia-a-dia e foi ainda feita uma comparação do tema da mobilidade inteligente na área metropolitana de Lisboa face outras cidades semelhantes na Europa. A metodologia adoptada passou pela análise de um dataset Europeu relativo às preferências dos cidadãos europeus acerca de soluções inovadoras alanvacadas pelas tecnologias emergentes e pelo desenvolvimento de um questionário para os cidadãos da área metropolitana de Lisboa. Os resultados mostram que existe um descontentamento dos cidadãos da área metropolitana de Lisboa com os sistemas de mobilidade existentes e que o carro pessoal é o meio de transporte mais utilizado; os resultados suportam ainda a importância do tema da mobilidade multimodal para a área metropolitana de Lisboa.

Abstract

GPS navigators are now present in most vehicles and smartphones. The usual goal of these navigators is to take the user in less time or distance to a destination. However, the global use of navigators in a given city could lead to traffic jams as they have a highly biased preference for some streets. From a general point of view, spreading the traffic throughout the city could be a way of preventing jams and making a better use of public resources. We propose a way of calculating alternative routes to be assigned by these devices in order to foster a better use of the streets. Our experimentation involves maps from OpenStreetMap, real road traffic, and the microsimulator SUMO. We contribute to reducing travel times, greenhouse gas emissions, and fuel consumption. To analyze the sociological aspect of any innovation, we analyze the penetration (acceptance) rate which shows that our proposal is competitive even when just 10% of the drivers are using it. Limited traffic infrastructures and increasing demands in dense urban regions lead to frequent delivery runs with smaller freight vehicles. This increases the traffic in urban areas and has negative impacts upon the quality of life in urban populations. Data driven optimizations are essential to better utilize existing urban transport infrastructures and to reduce the negative effects of freight deliveries for the cities. However, there is limited work and data driven research on urban delivery areas and freight transportation networks. In this paper, we collect and analyse data on urban freight deliveries and parking areas towards an optimized urban freight transportation system. Using a new check-in based mobile parking system for freight vehicles, we aim to understand and optimize freight distribution processes. We explore the relationship between areas' availability patterns and underlying traffic behaviour in order to understand the trends in urban freight transport. By applying the detected patterns we predict the availabilities of loading/unloading areas, and thus open up new possibilities for delivery route planning and better managing of freight transport infrastructures. © 2017 IEEE.

In fact, cities are generally the best place to endorse and enhance various experience in order to improve the quality of life of its citizens. In this context, the new vision of Smart Mobility fill into this context. The concept of Smart Mobility as a means to enhance the mobility experience of citizen has been gaining increasing importance in the agendas of cities stakeholder. It represents the best balance the economic, environmental and societal aspect of current transportation tools. The implementation of the smart mobility concept in the case of Tunis city is the subject matter of the paper. In fact, we focus on considering the Personal Rapid Transit system as an effective and efficient tool to bring smart mobility experience to Tunis city. This paper also presents and study the viability of implementing PRT in our specific context. An extensive simulation and economic feasibility study is conducted to validate our proposal. Abstract

This work presents the necessity of the implementation of mitigation techniques to counter the cybersecurity issues and threats that arise from the fifth generation (5G) embodiment in a smart city ecosystem. During the past few years, the popularity and growth of cellular technology has led the 5G networks to be considered as the emerging domain of future’s communication architecture. Moreover, the connected and autonomous vehicles constitute an essential part of smart cities infrastructure, providing the answer for the city’s mobility demands. With human safety being at stake, the security assurance is of the utmost importance. The requirement of ensuring a safe transportation system with complete trust to the smart city ecosystem is sufficiently described, while proper counter-measures within the scope of 5G connectivity are proposed.
