Abstract

A comparison between new and existing triangular finite elements based on the shell theory proposed by Juan Carlos Simo and co-workers is presented. Particular emphasis is put on the description of new triangles which show a promising behaviour for linear and non linear shell analysis.

Abstract

The viscous shell approach combines the use of visco-plastic flow and classical shell theories. The paper presents the general aspects of the viscous shell formulation for axisymmetric and general 3-D shell problems using finite elements. Details of treatment of coordenate updating, friction effects, strain hardening and extensions to include the elastic deformations are also given together with some examples of application to the forming of axisymmetrical thin sheets of metal under hemispherical punches.

Abstract

In this paper, the new Geomiso SEA software (www.geomiso.com) is proposed for inelastic static isogeometric analysis with shell elements and splines. Geomiso SEA offers an innovative way to merge geometric design with mesh generation, by creating, with its modern user interface, 3D models as tensor product grids. The utilization of the exact mesh for analysis eliminates geometric errors, while there is no need of repeating the geometry design for refinement purposes. In contrast, the standard finite element technique, not only cannot fully utilize the available data ofthe exact mesh, but also makes engineers unable to benefit from advanced spline techniques. Real world and industry applications on both thick (Mindlin-Reissner) and thin (Kirchhoff­Love) shells are demonstrated with a comparison between Geomiso SEA and FEA programs with shell and hexahedral elements.

Abstract

In this paper the new Geomiso SEA software (www.geomiso.com) is proposed for applications on inelastic static isogeometric analysis with shell elements. This hybrid program is applicable to real world structures, while it satisfies the rising need for technical software of dual CAD/CAA nature. It is based on the new isogeometric method, which has attracted a lot of attention for solving boundary value problems. T-spline-based isogeometric shell analysis efficiently handles multi-patch geometries. Geomiso SEA is not just a plug-in, but a complete software solution, used to simulate spline models of structures or machine components, for analyzing their strength and behavior. The utilization of the exact mesh for analysis vanishes geometric errors, while there is no need of repeating the geometry design for refinement purposes. Industry applications on both thick and thin shells are demonstrated with a comparison between Geomiso SEA and FEA programs. This unique solution for seamless integration of the industrial design of shell geometries with its computational realtime testing, appears to be preferable to FEA programs, representing major improvements, such as higher accuracy, and considerably reduced computational cost.
