Abstract

The publication of a letter by Fuster addressed to the author of this article in 28 August 1984, in which anecdotes and characters of the Catalan culture from the first third of the 16th century are dealt with in a humorous and free and easy manner, is the author's pretext to reconstruct aspects ofthe essayist's character as a scholar of literature in the Decadence period.

Abstract

The expression «valenciana prosa» , used from the XVth century onwards by writers like Roís de Corella, Miquel Peres, Bernardí de Vallmanya, and others, has been interpreted in different and sometimes contradictory ways (Rubió i Lluch, Nicolau d'Olwer, Riquer, Fuster, Coromines, etc). The author of this article considers it to be a mere way of outlining the fact that a given text was written in «lengua valenciana», this is to say in the modality of the Catalan Language used in Valencia, and that does not therefore relate to any specific literary style.

Considering Joan Fuster's Recull de contes valencians published in 1958, this paper analyses the short story situation during the franquism. On the one hand, It takes into account the precedents that appeared between 1938 and 1958 and on the other hand, the authors and the compilation.

The purpose of the paper is to analyse the post-war Valencian narrative and the vital agony which is present in almost all the published short stories, especially after Joan Fuster's Recull de contes valencians published in 1958. It also analyses the authors' short stories, the readings, influences and the importance of existencialism and vital pessimism.

Abstract

The main goal of this article is to bring up the topic of irony in the essay as a literary genre, based on the considerations made by Eugeni d’Ors, Josep Pla and Joan Fuster. The emergence of the definition of irony as an incomplete adhesion, which refers to Ors although it has lasted especially through Pla, is revised here; the intellectual history of the definition is analyzed in order to consider in which moment Fuster’s essay relates to it and, taking irony as a starting point, it gives a boost to ontemporary Catalan essay.
