Abstract

The stricter safety requirements in the rail industry – implied by the EN 50128 standard – contribute to an increasing demand for testing rail vehicles and their subsystems, especially vehicle main controllers. Hardware-in-the-Loop method, which is commonly used in automotive and aerospace domains, has proved to be functionally useful. However, such systems would usually exceed the budget of a development project in the railway industry, due to short series manufacturing and multiple vehicle variants. To deal with this problem Tritem Microsystems has designed Virtual-HIL which decreases the overall cost and increases portability of this kind of a system. In this paper, we present both the classic approach and our groundbreaking system, along with a use case from one of our recent projects together with an automated testing framework built on the top of our Virtual HIL.

Abstract

Under the SAFE4RAIL project, we are developing a simulation platform based on a discrete-events network simulator."br" This platform models the Train-to-Ground (T2G) link in the framework of a system-level simulation of"br" Train Control Management System (TCMS). The modelled T2G link is based on existing wireless technologies,"br" e.g. Wi-Fi and LTE. Different T2G scenarios are defined in order to evaluate the performances of the Mobile"br" Communication Gateway (managing train communications) and Quality of Services (QoS) offered to TCMS applications"br" in the context of various environments (regular train lines, train stations, shunting zones, etc.) while"br" varying the number of communicating trains, train’s speed, radio channel characteristics (delay spread, channel"br" attenuation, etc.). This paper focusses on the design and validation of the TCMS transmission over Wi-Fi/LTE via"br" an approach based on simulation. This simulation platform aims to be also used to test actual TCMS equipment’s,"br" i.e. Mobile Communication Gateway and Ground Communication Gateway, connected to it through Hardware-"br" In-the-Loop facilities of the chosen discrete-events network simulator. Abstract

Vehicle control systems such as ESC (electronic stability control), MDPS (motor-driven power steering), and ECS (electronically controlled suspension) improve vehicle stability, driver comfort, and safety. Vehicle control systems such as ACC (adaptive cruise control), LKA (lane-keeping assistance), and AEB (autonomous emergency braking) have also been actively studied in recent years as functions that assist drivers to a higher level. These DASs (driver assistance systems) are implemented using vehicle sensors that observe vehicle status and send signals to the ECU (electronic control unit). Therefore, the failure of each system sensor affects the function of the system, which not only causes discomfort to the driver but also increases the risk of accidents. In this paper, we propose a new method to detect and isolate faults in a vehicle control system. The proposed method calculates the constraints and residuals of 12 systems by applying the model-based fault diagnosis method to the sensor of the chassis system. To solve the inaccuracy in detecting and isolating sensor failure, we applied residual sensitivity to a threshold that determines whether faults occur. Moreover, we applied a sensitivity analysis to the parameters semi-correlation table to derive a fault isolation table. To validate the FDI (fault detection and isolation) algorithm developed in this study, fault signals were injected and verified in the HILS (hardware-in-the-loop simulation) environment using an RCP (rapid control prototyping) device.
