Abstract

Since January 1, 2017, 25.25 m EuroCombis (ECs) with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 40 t"br" are allowed in German national freight transport on a specified part of the road network. This decision was based"br" on a field test of the potential risks of the EC operation that was carried out under the surveillance by the Federal"br" Highway Research Institute (BASt). However, the assessment mainly focused on safety concerns rather than on"br" environmental impacts. To gain additional insights on the climate effects related to the EC use, a dedicated study"br" was initiated by the state government of Baden-Württemberg and Daimler AG. In this paper, we present the impact"br" of ECs on the modal split of national road and rail freight transport and the corresponding impact on greenhouse"br" gas (GHG) emissions. Analysis was carried out for a 2010 scenario mirroring the conditions of the field test and"br" for a 2030 scenario with a non-restricted highway network.

large fraction of the total number of particles emitted by direct injection engines are below the adopted 23 nm diameter threshold and although the EU aims to regulate these emissions, this is not yet possible due to the absence of accurate and reliable quantification methods, especially under real driving conditions. Four research organisations, three particle measurement instrumentation companies and one automotive OEM have joined forces in the framework of the EU-funded project SUREAL-23 to overcome such barriers by introducing novel technology for the measurement of sub-23 nm exhaust particle concentration, size and composition. The main objectives of SUREAL-23 are to (a) simplify and make more robust the exhaust aerosol sample treatment, (b) elucidate the effect of different diesel and gasoline engine operating conditions on sub-23 nm particle emissions and (c) advance particle measurement technology with the introduction of novel techniques. Herein, we present our latest efforts on instrumentation development and aerosol sampling.

Abstract

Standardization of emission calculation is progressing swiftly in order to support the improvement of the sustainability of transport chains. Using the GLEC Framework v1.0 as a starting point, this research maps out, which further gaps need to be addressed for ensuring seamless coverage at a meaningful accuracy of such a calculation. The analysis is based on a desk research complemented by considerations and feedback received in the context of real-life test cases of the GLEC Framework. The paper closes with an outlook on requirements towards an eco-label related to the emission calculation standardization.
