Abstract

Lockheed Martin Hanford Corporation (LMHC) is providing an overground transfer (OGT) system for use in saltwell pumping of the 241-S-Tank Farm. Fluor Daniel Northwest (FDNW) was requested to support the effort by completing the design of the OGT system and completing the construction of the encasement pipe and encasement pipe support system. FDNW will also install the concrete shielding blocks for the OGT system. The shielding block system will provide a vehicle barrier for protection of the OGT line and will provide a radiation barrier for operations personnel. LMHC is responsible for the regulatory compliance of the entire transfer system. This installation instruction covers the encasement piping, pipe supports, heat tracing, thermal insulation, leak detectors, temperature indicators, and the shielding blocks. Installation of the primary (inner) pipe and associated equipment was completed at a previous time and the integrity of the primary piping will be confirmed by LMHC prior to operation of the system. Abstract

This report provides an estimate of the leak rate from the emergency pump well in L-basin that is to be expected during an off-normal event. This estimate is based on expected shrinkage of the engineered grout (i.e., controlled low strength material) used to fill the emergency pump well and the header pipes that provide the dominant leak path from the basin to the lower levels of the L-Area Complex. The estimate will be used to provide input into the operating safety basis to ensure that the water level in the basin will remain above a certain minimum level. The minimum basin water level is specified to ensure adequate shielding for personnel and maintain the ''as low as reasonably achievable'' concept of radiological exposure. The need for the leak rate estimation is the existence of a gap between the fill material and the header pipes, which penetrate the basin wall and would be the primary leak path in the event of a breach in those pipes. The gap between the pipe and fill material was estimated based on a full scale demonstration pour that was performed and examined. Leak tests were performed on full scale pipes as a part of thismore » examination. Leak rates were measured to be on the order of 0.01 gallons/minute for completely filled pipe (vertically positioned) and 0.25 gallons/minute for partially filled pipe (horizontally positioned). This measurement was for water at 16 feet head pressure and with minimal corrosion or biofilm present. Abstract

This work describes the production and morphological, structural, and magnetic characterization, as well as the electromagnetic shielding properties of polymeric based composites reinforced with different ratios of magnetite and carbon black. This kind of composites are used not only for the manufacture of electronic elements such as shape memory polymers, sensors and transducers, but especially for the production of electromagnetic shielding materials in both passive defense and civil construction applications; Buildings, vehicles or airplanes.

The melt mixing method and vulcanization procees was followed for the manufacture of the composites.Composite materials with natural magnetite and synthetic magnetite have been considered separately. Reinforcements fillers were added in different ratios. The morphological analysis carried out by FESEM demonstrates the differences in size and shape of the fillers.Through the Raman and XPS spectroscopy the  interface matrix-fillers was studied. The magnetite content, as well as its source, directly affect the magnetic behavior of the composites. The electromagnetic shielding properties were evaluated in the X band of frequency (8-12 GHz) and K band (18-27 GHz), with attenuations greater than 34 dB for the composites with the highest amount of magnetite.
