Abstract

The World Bank Group, DFAT-Australia, and Carnival Australia have partnered to conduct this study of the economic impact of cruise ship tourism in Vanuatu. Data gathering and analysis for this study was carried out by Net Balance Management Group. Over the past 10 years, Vanuatu’s cruise arrivals have grown by 15 percent per year. Cruising to Vanuatu has been buoyed by an advantageous location within a few days’ sail of Australia, a varied destination offering centered on Port Vila, and consistently positive passenger feedback. In 2013, more than 240,000 people arrived in Vanuatu by cruise ship. This translates into 490,000 passenger days. The goal of this study is to quantify the economic impacts of cruising, and to provide data on the cruise sector’s effect on economic activity. The study then identifies a set of investment opportunities that can help to increase the economic benefits of cruise tourism in Vanuatu. This report therefore seeks to provide a platform that can be used by government, the private sector and donor partners to support further strategic, targeted development of cruising. Data on tourism, and by extension on cruise tourism, is not readily available in Vanuatu. This report is an attempt to capture initial economic information about the cruise industry and to provide a point of departure for additional research into the economic, social and environmental impacts of the cruise sector.

Abstract

This is a background paper to the Pacific Possible report. For many Pacific Island countries, tourism is the main economic opportunity to generate incomes and jobs. This report suggests that increasing tourism demand in four areas could drive growth of tourism arrivals in the Pacific: Increasing demand from Chinese tourists, retired persons, high income individuals, and cruise ship operators. It sets out key actions to capitalize on these potential sources of increased demand and ensure the development of the tourism sector in an environmentally, socially, and culturally sustainable manner.

International audience; In air transport, the evolution of traffic depends upon many economic factors, and on the way in which the markets participants respond to those factors. Although airlines are the main actors, the airports are by no means passive, and their strategies will also have an impact on airline behaviour and route development. Our methodology analyzes the potential evolution of airport strategies in the next decade and its impact on the distribution of traffic at airports, using a typology of airports that has been designed for this purpose. It shows in particular that diversification strategies, which are usually reserved for large firms, can also be successfully applied to smaller airports.

International audience; The objective of this empirical paper is to analyze the impact of an innovation in air transport system on airlines competitive behavior. We consider as innovation, the use of an aircraft with a significant higher capacity: the Airbus 380. Does the use of the A380 by an airline on a particular route give incentives to competitors to introduce as well this type on aircraft on the same route? To answer this question we use some econometric methods to estimate the impact of the introduction of the A380 by an airline, on the probability that airline’s competitors will follow up the innovation. Controlling for others factors which might impact the choice of innovation, we show that the use of the A380 by an airline on a route gives incentives to competitors to introduce it as well

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the route networks of two European low-cost airlines in 2015. A case study is presented which highlights the key differences and similarities of their route network characteristics that they operate, aimed toward improving understanding of the current Air Transport System (ATS) for modeling and simulation purposes.

"jats:p"The introduction of the Airbus A350-900 (A359) and the Boeing B787-9 (B789) have enabled airlines to operate ultra-long-range services. Using a mixed methods research design, this study has examined the air cargo-carrying potential of Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB (A359) and United Airlines Boeing B787-9 (789) aircraft on their ultra-long-haul San Francisco to Singapore and the Singapore to San Francisco air routes. The qualitative data was analysed using document analysis, and the air cargo payload was modelled by simulation. The air cargo-carrying potential of the two aircraft types was significantly influenced by enroute weather. In the event of eastbound winds, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB air cargo payload was 16.9 tonnes and the United Airlines Boeing 787-9 was 11.5 tonnes, when these flights had a full passenger payload. In the case of westbound winds with a full passenger payload, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB air cargo payload was 13.1 tonnes and the United Airlines Boeing 787-9 was 7.9 tonnes. When there were no winds on the air routes, the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900XWB offered 15.0 tonnes and the United Airline Boeing 787-9 offered 9.7 tonnes of air cargo payload, respectively. Abstract

Using a large matched employer-employee data set with information at both the worker and the company level we characterise the Portuguese airlines' employment structure and, by comparing it with the general structure of the Portuguese labour force, we stress the particularities of the sector. Based on the Heckman selection model, we develop an analysis of the variables that influence wages in this sector and which contribute to its differentiation from the general labour market. Particular attention is paid to the disparity among different types of jobs in the air transportation sector, namely amongst flight crews and land personnel. We also analyse the differences between regular and non-regular sub-sectors. Our main findings indicate that the aviation sector labour force is clearly specific regarding gender distribution and human capital accumulated by its workers. Moreover, some professions, pilots in particular, have important specificities compared to other jobs even within the sector. We also find that wages are strongly influenced by levels of education, tenure and experience as well as professional categories, which appears as an important specificity of this sector. Usando uma grande base de dados com correspondência empregador-empregado com informações tanto ao nível do trabalhador quanto da empresa, caracterizamos a estrutura de emprego das companhias aéreas portuguesas e, por meio de comparação com a estrutura geral da força de trabalho portuguesa, destacamos as particularidades do setor. Com base no modelo de seleção de Heckman, desenvolvemos uma análise das variáveis que influenciam os salários neste setor e que contribuem para a sua diferenciação do mercado de trabalho em geral. É dada atençao especial para a disparidade entre os diferentes tipos de empregos no setor de transporte aéreo, ou seja, entre os tripulantes e o pessoal de terra. Analisamos também as diferenças entre os subsetores de aviação regular e não-regular. Nossos principais resultados indicam que a força de trabalho no setor de aviação é claramente específica quanto à distribuição de gênero e de capital humano acumulado por seus trabalhadores. Além disso, algumas profissões, pilotos em particular, têm especificidades importantes em comparação com outros tipos de trabalhos, mesmo dentro do setor. Também apontamos para evidências de que os salários são fortemente influenciados pelos níveis de escolaridade, senioridade e experiência bem como pelas categorias profissionais, que aparecem como uma especificidade importante deste setor. M20, Z19 Air Transport allowed over time, to reduce distances, eliminate borders, increase mobility and contribute to a new model of society as we know today.These are some of the reasons why in recent years, there were times of growth, development and higher demand, strengthening its role in a society increasingly globalized. While environmental costs caused by air transport are often highlighted, very little is said about its benefits. Broadly speaking it can be said that aviation contributes to worldwide trade by opening access to several markets, for investment through internationalization and access to new resources and skills in order to stimulate productivity and encourage competition as well as tourism. Its importance should not therefore be questioned or neglected. On the contrary, the preparation of its future should be a constant concern by analyzing the main challenges for the sector and for all others involved. There are many paths to choose and several variables that must be taken into account. This study aims to analyze the main variables, to present perspectives, alert to emerging opportunities and external adverse factors, and to identify some options that can better serve Air Transport in Portugal. The purpose of this dissertation is also to highlight the weaknesses of this sector in Portugal and the need to consider a medium/long-term vision and a strategy for such an important sector for the Portuguese economy and society. O Transporte Aéreo permitiu ao longo dos tempos, reduzir distâncias, eliminar fronteiras e contribuir para o modelo de sociedade em que hoje vivemos, sendo estas algumas das causas pelas quais tem vivido nos últimos anos, tempos de grande expansão e procura, não só a nível de turismo como também em termos de viagens em negócios, reforçando ainda mais o seu papel numa sociedade cada vez mais globalizada. A sua importância não deve por isso ser posta em causa ou negligenciada, devendo ser uma preocupação constante a preparação do seu futuro analisando quais os desafios que se colocam ao sector e a todos os que o constroem. Existem diversos caminhos que podem ser escolhidos e várias variáveis a ter em conta. Este estudo tem como objectivo analisar essas variáveis e identificar caminhos que possam melhor servir o transporte aéreo Português. Enquanto os custos em termos ambientais provocados pelo transporte aéreo estão bem documentados, muito pouco é dito acerca dos seus benefícios. Em traços gerais pode dizer-se que a aviação contribui para as trocas comerciais abrindo acesso a diversos mercados, para o investimento através da internacionalização e do acesso a novos recursos e competências, para a produtividade estimulando a competição e para o turismo através da facilidade de unir viajantes e regiões. Este projecto ambiciona também alertar as fragilidades do sector em Portugal e a necessidade de pensar a médio longo prazo uma visão e uma estratégia para uma área de negócio tão importante para a economia e para a sociedade Portuguesa.
