Abstract

© 2018 IEEE. In this paper, the parallel-series compensation approach, based on LCL circuit, for Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) is designed, analyzed, and assessed with respect to the seriesseries compensation approach for transportation applications, shedding light typically on railway systems. Moreover, the design of the primary and secondary coils is addressed since it influences the performance and efficiency of the IPT system. A study considering two different coil shapes, namely DD and oblong, is conducted to select a proper design that would provide a good coupling between the system's coils. Theoretical analysis and system design are provided for an electric railway vehicle with a rated power of 75 kW and a DC input voltage of 750V. Experimental results for a scaled down prototype, at an airgap of 1cm, are Prasented to validate the proposed concept. An output power of 215W with an efficiency of 93% of the IPT system has been achieved experimentally.
