The paper offers a study of the metatheatrical dimension of Calderón’s «comedia palatina» Las manos blancas no ofenden (c. 1640). After some theoretical definitions, the structure of the text is analyzed through the examination of several metatheatrical devices and the use of notions such as the technique of disguise, the «superior audience awareness» and «dramatic irony». Based on that, it is proposed a stratification of the play in four levels of representation and simulation. Finally, the specular effects that the comedy would produce in the context of its contemporary representation are pointed out.
