Abstract

Bridges are one of the key structural elements in the transportation system where the performance of the transportation network is based on their reliability. Therefore, in order to guarantee the demanded performance in the traffic system, bridges are regularly inspected, maintained and repaired or renovated according to the safety standards. The most commonly used inspection method for bridges is visual inspection with which large amount of data are recorded. With the objective of providing a tool for a comprehensive data documentation and transfer of data to a central server, an application was developed. The application allows an interactive interface for imaging and contextual data logging using smart phone or tablet. This collected data is directly sent to the central server. This fully automated approach enables an inspection with immediate recording of engineering data and an in-situ analysis as well as easy retrieval of historical data.
