Abstract

Well functioning traffic and transport system is a necessity for an industrialized and complex society. The way in which the existing transport system is shaped and functions, however, causes major societal problems. Emissions of pollutants from vehicles create health hazards to humans and other living species. CO2-emissions contribute to global warming. The continuously increasing numbers of vehicles cause congestion, worsen accessibility of many destinations and threaten the livability of cities and living quarters.
