L’objectiu central d’aquesta comunicació és posar de manifest que sense una nova relació dels humans amb els recursos materials, serà pràcticament impossible efectuar la transició energètica i mitigar els efectes del canvi climàtic. La Terra és un sistema obert pel que fa a l’energia: rep la radiació del Sol i emet la mateixa quantitat d’energia a l’espai; en canvi, pel que fa als recursos materials, la Terra és un sistema tancat. La naturalesa té la capacitat de regenerar en un temps breu els materials orgànics dels éssers vius però no els materials geològics. La gestió de l’enorme quantitat de materials de la civilització humana actual (100 Gt el 2022) requereix de l’ordre de 1/2 del sistema energètic humà i emet el 70% dels gasos amb efecte hivernacle (la meitat si s’exclou AFOLU), dels quals les 2/3 parts en les operacions d’extracció i obtenció. Amb la fi de l’era dels fòssils, la gestió dels materials passa a ser un dels reptes centrals que obligaran a capgirar dos punts essencials: la fi d’un desenvolupament basat en el creixement continu de materials i la substitució d’una economia lineal basada en extreure-usar-llançar per una economia de caràcter circular. The main objective of this communication is to emphasize that without a new relationship between humans and material resources, it will be practically impossible to achieve the energy transition and mitigate the effects of climate change. The Earth is an open system in terms of energy: it receives radiation from the Sun and emits the same amount of energy into space; however, in terms of material resources, the Earth is a closed system. Nature has the capacity to regenerate in a short time the organic matter of living beings, but not geological matter. The management of the enormous amount of materials of current human civilization (100 Gt in 2022) requires about half of the human energy system and emits 70% of greenhouse gases (half if we excluded AFOLU), of which 2/3 in extraction and obtaining operations. With the end of the fossil era, the management of materials becomes one of the central challenges that will force us to reverse two essential points: the end of a development based on the con-tinuous growth of materials and the replacement of a linear economy based on ex-tract-use-throw with a circular economy. The communication closes with some reflec-tions on the new attitudes and actions that will have to be adopted within the frame-work of post-fossil sustainable development, where special emphasis is placed on the need to educate.
