The project under assessment concerns the construction of an aqueduct in order to divert water from Tajo-Segura Channel onto the Cenajo reservoir and to the water purification plants of Sierra de la Espada and of Campotéjar. The main objective is to improve water quality rather than quantity

Abstract

In this paper we will discuss the experience gained in the Netherlands with the multifunctional management of waterways. We will especially go into how the functions of rivers and canals for navigation and nature are combined. For this we will briefly go back to the national paper for Seville 1994, "Waterways with room for nature", in which the essence of the multifunctional approach has been outlined. Preserving the infrastructure of waterways in a sustainable manner is in the Netherlands also made possible by a special way of cooperation between responsible authorities and nature conservation organizations which we will discuss here. By means of five cases we will present our experience with combining functions in waterway management, particular attention being paid to the combination of navigation and nature. The cases have been classified according to the Rivers and Canals watersystems. Before discussing experiences, we will give a short description of the characteristics of the systems and the possibilities in these to combine nature (development) and navigation. We will conclude by going into what we have learnt the past ten years and will offer a view of what will become important in the future when combining the functions of waterways.

Abstract

This article aims to identify some commonalities and differences in intermodal freight in France and Japan, focusing on urban zones. This comparison puts into perspective two spatial situations linked with land pressure. It helps us identify opportunities for knowledge transfer of best practices for the promotion of modal shift and for land use and planning policies that favor intermodal freight. Research works have been carried out on intermodal logistic policies at national scales. However, in urban areas, the use of intermodal services has specific characteristics. Intermodal services are difficult to implement for last mile deliveries, as waterways and railways are used for high volume flows. Nevertheless, during the last decade, an increasing number of projects including intermodal services for the “mile before last” have been set up. Document type: Conference object

Abstract

Summary. This paper describes guidelines and recommendations for emergencies and incidents on inland waterways. It also provides a review of existing knowledge of an LNG incident that occurred along the European inland waterway corridors. The article also reports on the latest progress in incident guidelines and describes the tools for port authorities to control credible scenarios produced by human or technical failures. This paper aims to analyse the risks that occur during transportation of liquefied natural gas. The possible strategies for the elimination of LNG spills and accidents are also discussed. This study intends to evaluate the positional accuracy and compare the completeness of the drainage networks extracted from three sources of free geographic data, namely from the Digital Elevation Models ASTER and SRTM and the collaborative project OpenStreetMap (OSM), in an area included in the basin of Mondego river, located in the centre of continental Portugal. The drainage networks extracted from ASTER and SRTM are generated considering several values of flow accumulation as the critical level to identify the water courses and the feature “waterway” was extracted from OSM. To assess the completeness and positional accuracy of these water courses the drainage network of the 1/25000 topographic map of the Portuguese Army Geographical Institute was used as reference. The distance between the ASTER, SRTM and OSM derived water courses to the reference data was computed as well as the length of the water courses and the results compared.

WOS: 000256076400008 An important objective of a microirrigation system is to determine the proper operating inlet pressure head, ensuring the desired level of water application uniformity as well as the allowable pressure head variation along the multioutlet pipeline. This paper offers, simple, direct, but sufficiently accurate, relationships incorporating different microirrigation uniformity parameters, such as Christiansen uniformity coefficient, coefficient of variation of emitter discharge, and allowable pressure head variation, to determine the operating inlet pressure head (i.e., pressure head and outflow profiles) for multioutlet plastic pipelines. In this analysis some mathematical expressions were deduced to relate three uniformity parameters; then the operating inlet pressure head is simply reformulated by taking into account a multiplying factor alpha to the required average outlet pressure head, in terms of three uniformity parameters. Resulting, the influence of different uniform pipe slopes on the water application uniformity and the operating inlet pressure head for various emitter discharge exponents, was evaluated. In addition, to cover various design combinations an extensive comparison between the proposed equations and those of the previous studies was also presented. Examination of the results from this research indicated that, the performance of the proposed technique is sufficient in comparison to those of the recent analytical and numerical procedures.
