Abstract

Human machine interfaces (HMI) in the product division of air traffic management (ATM) are in use for long time spans. For an efficient use of HMIs not only user centered but also migration tolerant designs are important. Migration tolerance therefore means considering future requirements for a long lasting controller HMI life cycle. For efficient ATM, the concept of system wide information management (SWIM) will be introduced. This generates a large amount of additional information that will influence controller work. In this paper, we therefore describe a new controller role called Information-and-Conflict-Manager (ICM) who handles the complexity induced by SWIM. The resulting HMI design draft demonstrates how the integration of data could be managed. ICM also supervises training to support controllers successfully passing future flight guidance transitions. System Wide Information Management (SWIM) inAir Traffic Management (ATM) aims to facilitate access to ATM information via information services, thereby fostering common situational awareness among stakeholders. The development of information services and applications with added value in SWIM will comprise finding, selecting, filtering and composition ofdata/information from different sources, which is also referred to as ‘data logic’. Semantic containers are a means to encapsulate the data logic and clearly separate it from business and presentation logic. The provisioning of semantic containers for a specific purpose encompasses the discovery of existing source containers and often further value-adding processing steps such as filtering and annotation. Common semantic web technologies may serve to implement the semantic container approach

Abstract

Pilot briefings, in their traditional form, drown pilots in a sea of information. Rather than unfocused swathes of air traffic management (ATM) information,pilots require only the information for their specific flight. In this paper, we introduce the notion of ATM information cubes. We propose a conceptual framework with merge and abstraction operations for the combination and summarization of the information that is organized in ATM information cubes. A merge operation combines ATM information from individual cells of an ATM information cube. An abstraction operation summarizes the data items within a cell, replacing individual data items by more abstract data items with summary information.
