Abstract

With the growing volume and complexity of air traffic, air traffic controllers (ATCOs) encounter heavier burden nowadays. Therefore, human factors study in air traffic control (ATC) is increasingly essential, paving the way to a safer air transportation system. In this paper, we conducted an ATC experiment, where Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected throughout the experiment. Compared to traditional questionnaires and psychological tests used in human factors study, the proposed novel EEG approach provides monitoring of situation awareness (SA) in a non-invasive and non-interruptive fashion. SA was represented as the response latency in situation present assessment method (SPAM), which was predicted from EEG signals using three machine learning algorithms. Support vector regression obtained the lowest prediction error of 1.5 seconds, which is lower than 10% of the range of actual response latency. The results show that EEG is a promising approach forward in measuring situation awareness of ATCOs in both real-time and accurate manner.

Abstract

This paper is focused on the fault tolerance of Human Machine Interfaces in the field of air traffic control (ATC) by accepting the overall user's body language as input. We describe ongoing work in progress in the project called Sixth Sense. Interaction patterns are reasoned from the combination of a recommendation and inference engine, the analysis of several graph database relationships and from multiple sensor raw data aggregations. Altogether, these techniques allow us to judge about different possible meanings of the current user's interaction and cognitive state. The results obtained from applying different machine learning techniques will be used to make recommendations and predictions on the user's actions. They are currently monitored and rated by a human supervisor.

Abstract

The main aim of this research is to look at the attitude of the Austrian public and different stakeholders towards Autonomous mobility, especially self-driving cars and design some possible measures for further research and policy makers on the topic public acceptance, engagement and information. Our research has so far shown that measures concerning traffic safety are key for the successful introduction of autonomous driving in Austria. This approach has to include measures concerning target-oriented information, research about the interaction mode between vulnerable road users and autonomous cars as well as measures regarding future training and licensing.
