Abstract

This report is the Deliverable 3 . 1 R - WAKE System Design Document , resulting from WP3 activities. It provides details on the design of the resear ch methodology, simulation fram ework and validation activities, as described in previous deliverables D2.1, D2.2 and D2.3, and whose contents are updated in this document with an incremental perspective and with the appropriate level of detail for this sta ge of the project. The R - Wake project addresses the SESAR 2020 Exploratory Research work - programme topic ER - 07 - 2015 - Separation Management and Separation Standards , within the area of Advanced Air Traffic Services (ATS). The R - Wake project overall object ive is to investigate the risks and hazards of potential wake vortex encounters in the en - route airspace, in current and futuristic operational scenarios, in order to assess the potential enhancements to the Separation Standards and Separation Management m ethods in Europe .

Abstract

This report is the Deliverable 4.1 R-WAKE Release 1 Document, resulting from half of WP4 activities. It provides details on the early results regarding the simulation framework and validation activities, as described in previous deliverables D2.1, D2.2, D2.3, and D3.1. In this document, together with other documents attached as annexes, three main topics are addressed: 1) the implementation status of the software tool for the micro-analysis of en-route wake vortex encounters and the level of confidence of its outputs; 2) the execution of the safety assessment to define a preliminary version of the Severity Matrix (the first tangible outcome of the project); and 3) the implementation status of the simulation framework for the macro-analysis of the project. Abstract

This report represents deliverable D4.2 “System Release 2” of the R-WAKE project, which describes the final system resulting from WP4 (System Development) intended to support the research objectives and scope to be addressed as central task of WP5 (Simulation and Analysis). WP5 stands as the user of the system, with the central objective of providing an evidence-based proposal for either maintaining current separation-standards, or adopting new potential separation improvements, that is, the R-WAKE Concept(s) to be further investigated. The report includes an update of the research objectives and scope, in terms of research questions and targeted study scenarios, which incorporates the recommendations discussed during the mid-term review of the project. Abstract

This work has been partly financed thanks to the Generalitat de Catalunya (Grant number 2017-SGR-1278). This paper studies trade-offs between flight and passenger delays and fairness when assigning delay pre-tactically (on-ground at origin airport) due to reduced airport capacity. The paper also defines and analyses efficiency-fairness tradeoffs. The optimisation model is based on the ground holding problem and uses various objective functions: total delay for flights (considering reactionary delay), total delay for passengers (considering outbound connections), and deviation from a Ration By Schedule solution (to get a measure of the fairness of the solution). The scenario considered takes place at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, a busy European hub airport, and includes realistic values of traffic. Peer Reviewed

Abstract

This paper was partially funded by grants from the CSC No 201506830050 and by the SESAR Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 699338. —This paper proposes a method to synchronize traffic flow optimization and sector opening scheduling, with the aim of achieving flexible demand and capacity balancing (DCB). Delay assignment, trajectory options and sector collapsing are used to manage the traffic demand, while sector opening schemes are to affect the airspace capacity. Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model is built to incorporate these initiatives. Three model variants are presented to illustrate the synchronization process, and their results in a real-world case study demonstrate some promising improvements for the DCB performances.
