Abstract

The GMPLS standardization is paving the way for new configurable Traffic Engineering (TE) policies and new survivability schemes for transport networks. In this context, a centralized Path Computation System (PCS) has been implemented, suited for transport networks with a GMPLS control plane. After a brief description of the requirements for a PCS in a GMPLS network, some design issues for the proposed implementation are drawn, with particular emphasis on the centralized approach and on the strategies for achieving the connection survivability. Some results of an intensive testing campaign are shown for the validation of the design choices. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

The GMPLS standardization is paving the way for the implementation of new configurable traffic engineering (TE) policies for transport networks. This paper takes aim at evaluating the effects of using bandwidth-dependent TE metrics in a centralized Path Computation System (PCS), suited for handling the routing requests in an operational transport network with a GMPLS control plane. The results of an intensive testing campaign show an evident improvement in the utilization of network resources when such TE metrics are enabled, whatever survivability requirement is imposed on the LSP (e.g. classical 1+1 protection, pre-planned or On-the-Fly restoration, etc.). Moreover, a simple policy function is suggested as a good trade-off between the achievable performance and the computing load on CPU. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Abstract

This paper presents a brief summary of the work conducted by the MSRC at Strathclyde University in which the"br" effect of operational location on the estimation of a vessel’s survival probability has been investigated and new sfactor"br" formulations proposed. Further work is presented in which updated accident wave statistics have been used"br" in order to assess the impact of vessel specific data on the predicted survivability. A test case on a large container"br" ship has been conducted in order to gauge the effect of the new s-factor formula on the Attained Subdivision Index"br" and thus the vessel safety level with regards to collision damage. Abstract

Commercial fishing is one of the least safe activities taking place within the EU and the worldwide community today. Several accidents and fatalities have been recorded over the past years stemming from various causes related to the operation, design of the vessels and severe weather conditions. This paper describes the background while attempting to elucidate and assess the impact of a new flooding containment system for new and existing fishing vessels, leading to high levels of survivability in the damaged condition. Highly expanded foam is injected in the most vulnerable compartments, rendering the whole ship a lifeboat. One case study is presented to provide the requisite evidence.
