Abstract

This article presents the establishment of a model of understanding the access mode and railway station choice of Slovenian passengers. Therefore, a model has been designed to predict the determination of existing decision making preferences of railway users about the access mode and railway station choice with a stated preference survey and face to face method. The target group in the survey were railway passengers in the suburban environment that use the rail for work and school purposes. The total number of respondents was 412. The survey showed that most passengers access the railway station with car (60,2%), by foot (26,2%), with public transport (bus – 8,3%) and with bike (5,3%). Average distance to the station is 4,9 km, average time of access is 10,5 min. Upon exit most passengers walk to the final destination (84,5%), use the public transport (bus – 14,1%), car (1,2%) or bike (0,2%). Average time from exit of the train to final destination is 13,1 min, average distance is 1,58 km. Der Artikel präsentiert die Errichtung von einem Modell für Darstellung von Auswahl des Zutrittes und der Bahnstation von Passagieren in Slowenien. Dafür wurde ein Modell errichtet, der die vorhandenen Entscheidungen von Bahnpassagieren in den Bereich von Auswahl des Zutrittes und der Bahnstation prognostiziert aufgrund einer Umfrage und „von Angesicht zu Angesicht“ Methode. Die Zielgruppe der Umfrage waren Bahnpassagiere in einer suburbanen Umgebung die die Bahn benutzen um in die Schule oder zur Arbeit zu fahren. Teilgenommen haben 412 Bahnbenutzer. Die Umfrage hat gezeigt, dass die meisten Passagiere zum Bahnhof mit einem Auto fahren (60,2%), zur Fuß (26,2%) oder mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln kommen (Bus – 8,3%) oder mit einem Fahrrad (5,3%). Der durchschnittliche Abstand zur Bahnstation ist 4,9 km, die durchschnittliche Zugang Zeit ist 10,5 min. Beim Austritt von der Bahn gehen die meisten Passagiere zu dem Endpunkt der Reise zu Fuß (84,5%), mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln (Bus 14,1%), mit einem Auto (1,2%) oder mit einem Fahrrad (0,2%). Abstract

MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2019 The present economic climate in which public transport companies operate is highly competitive and presents various challenges that hinder the growth of many operators. The public transport sector includes both subsidised and non-subsidised operators, and operators in the formal sector are more regulated than operators in the informal sector. Considering the resulting great variation in the operational environments within which operators function, external factors may have as much influence on the management of the company as internal factors. Therefore, it is beneficial for companies to identify the challenges that affect the industry of operators in the private sector, specifically bus operators. While various studies have been conducted on either the informal sector or the subsidised sector within the transport industry and the challenges operators face, literature on crucial factors influencing bus operators, particularly in the private sector, is lacking. This knowledge gap prevents the operators in this sector from remaining competitive and viable in the future. This study will enable managers and owners of passenger transport companies in the private bus operators sector to recognise the challenges faced in order to strategically align policies and operational strategies for future sustainability. This mini-dissertation is based on an analytical study that was conducted to identify the challenges faced by a private bus operator, and thereby offering insight into the operating environment. The findings and insights around these challenges will help management identify and incorporate operational and strategic elements into their short and medium term strategies that will secure a more sustainable continuation of business for their company. This study consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 provides the nature and the scope of the study, the background to the study, the research problem, objectives, methodology, and limitations. Chapter 2 provides a theoretical literature review of the public transport industry in South Africa and the challenges bus operators face. Chapter 3 involves an empirical review and content analysis. Lastly, Chapter 4 includes an overall overview and conclusion of the study, and recommendations for future research. Master

Abstract

Global socio-economic and environmental megatrends are urging for a paradigm shift in mobility and transport. An action plan for the coherent implementation of innovative transport and mobility solutions in Europe is thus urgently needed and should be sustained by a wide range of societal stakeholders. The MOBILITY4EU project is working on developing such an action plan considering all modes of transport of passengers and freight. This contribution details the methodology and the results on trends, solutions and opportunities for cross-modal and cross-sector collaboration. The initiative towards a European Transport and Mobility Forum that continues the work beyond the project duration and works on complementing the action plan is introduced.

Abstract

In this paper four energy scenarios for Westy-European passenger transport are developed. To start with, the present transport system as a base-line case is described and analysed. Next, for each scenario we sketch how the passenger transport system may look like in terms of the use of various existing and future transport technologies and the corresponding model split. Based on this information, expected energy consumption features of the various transport modes are described, data on the present fuel supply and electricity generation system are offered, and estimations of the future energy system are given. Then, the energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with the future passenger transport systems are stressed and these impacts are compared with the current system. The conclusion is that a large-scale reduction of CO2 emissions is possible in several ways. Each way will cause many problems, since drastic policy measures will have to be introduced, which may affect economic growth and the lifestyles of individuals.
