Abstract

This study examines the interrelatedness between the hierarchical structure of China׳s urban system and high-speed railway (HSR) network planning at the national level. As a multi-layered system, the Chinese HSR can be categorized into three sub-networks, namely, the national HSR trunk network, the national HSR extensional network, and the intercity HSR network. By examining the direct HSR network connection, HSR nodal connection, and HSR operational frequency of 287 prefecture-level cities, this study demonstrates that the hierarchies of China׳s administrative, demographic, and economic urban systems strongly influence HSR network planning. The national HSR trunk network prioritizes the connection of top-level central cities, whereas the extensional network prioritizes cities at the lower level of the urban system. Moreover, the national HSR system forms the backbone of the HSR network structure based on a national scale, whereas the intercity HSR system satisfies the travel needs within urban agglomerations based on the regional level.

Abstract

This thesis mainly focuses on all-optical lightpaths establishment. We consider all along the thesis optical networks with finite resources, that is with a given maximum amount of wavelengths per fiber. Both exact and approximate optimization techniques are considered. In a first step, we investigate the problem of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) considering permanent lightpath demands (PLDs) and develop ILPs (Integer Linear Programs) for both the routing and the wavelength assignment sub-problems. This work is then extend to deal with two classes of traffic demands referred to as scheduled lightpath demands (SLDs) and random lightpath demands (RLDs). On one hand, SLDs are characterized by pre-known dates of arrival and life durations. They may correspond for instance to a set of long term lightpath establishments in order to provide Optical Virtual Private Network services. On the other hand, RLDs are characterized by random arrival and life duration processes. In a second step, we deal with the routing and spare capacity assignment (RSCA) problem. Once again ILPs and heuritics are proposed to deal with the RSCA problem for PLDs, SLDs and RLDs. Due to the wavelength continuity constraint, a new lightpath demand may be rejected. In a third step, we focus on the improvement of the lightpath demand rejection ratio by means of lightpath rerouting strategies. We have developed such strategies in order to minimize traffic disruption on already routed demands. For each step, we have developed multiple optimization tools which have been applied to a wide range of network sizes, topologies and traffic scenarios. Our conclusions are then drawn based on these results.; Cette thèse porte essentiellement sur les problématiques fondamentales d'optimisation combinatoire qui se dégagent de la modélisation structurelle et algorithmique du dimensionnement des réseaux de transport WDM tout-optiques. L'optimisation de ces réseaux est nécessaire aux opérateurs de télécommunication, qui demandent la garantie d'une exploitation efficace des ressources déployées. La thèse est organisée en trois parties. La première partie traite du problème de routage et affectation de longueur d'onde. Nous proposons de résoudre le problème considérant des demandes de trafic permanentes. Des méthodes à la fois exactes basées sur la programmation linéaire et approchées ont été développées. Nous étendons ensuite le modèle de trafic pour considérer simultanément des demandes de trafic pré-planifiées et des demandes de trafic aléatoires. Différent algorithmes de routage ont été développés. Les différents algorithmes ont été comparés en terme de taux de rejet global. La deuxième partie concerne le problème de routage et affectation de longueurs d'onde avec protection. Les ressources dédiées à la protection sont rarement sollicitées, nous cherchons à en minimiser le nombre grâce au multiplexage des circuits optiques de protection. Des méthodes exactes et approchées sont encore une fois proposées considérant les demandes de trafic citées ci-dessus. La dernière partie présente un algorithme de reroutage de canaux optiques afin d'améliorer le taux de rejet dans les réseaux tout-optiques sans convertisseurs en longueurs d'onde. Plusieurs variantes de l'algorithme ont été proposées. Les résultats obtenus montrent un gain intéressant en terme de taux de rejet.
