Abstract

This paper presents a prototype for single-rate reliable multicast congestion control, which has been built into an existing commercial whiteboard. The prototype was developed using a novel scheme that was engineered around conflicting industry provided requirements for collaborative workspaces. This required the scheme to be both low-weight when used with many senders and compatible with NAT, firewalls and reflectors. The key to overcome this conflict was to combine congestion control and recovery feedback. This differs from many current solutions in that they are often designed for use with a wide variety of protocols and thus operate independent of the recovery mechanism. This paper does not go into the detail required to specify a protocol but instead discusses a few important design requirements for multi-sender applications, which are generally not considered by current research, and describes an approach towards meeting these requirements. Abstract

We show that the “fractal” behavior of Internet traffic can be efficiently and practically employed to significantly reduce packet-loss. Thanks to recent advances in the theory of self-similar processes, we define the probabilistic congestion of a link, based on an estimated computation of the packet-loss probability over that link. This congestion parameter allows valid predictions on the future behavior of the network, on which one can base efficient routing strategies. We show how to implement the computation of the probabilistic congestion, and we illustrate several applications for improving unicast and multicast protocols. Part 5: Resource Management; International audience; There is a demand in the Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) community for high bandwidth services on mobile devices. Group communication is an important aspect of PPDR networks. In IP based networks multicast is the preferred method to efficiently transmit data to more than one receiver simultaneously. It is important PPDR users can switch seamlessly between wireless networks. This paper describes improvements to multicast in Fast handovers for Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PFMIPv6) to provide seamless mobility to its users. We also identify and explore the specific problems stemming from difference in end-to-end delay between the old and new path during handovers for multicast traffic. A novel mechanism to determine the delay difference between two paths in a PFMIPv6 system is described and an implementation of this system is evaluated. It is shown the proposed approach can prevent multicast packet loss during a handover. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book
