Abstract

In recent years, more and increased participation in Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) projects provides enough data coverage for most places around the world for ordinary mapping and navigation purposes, however, the positional credibility of contributed data becomes more and more important to bring a long-term trust in VGI data. Today, it is hard to draw a definite traditional boundary between the authoritative map producers and the public map consumers and we observe that more and more volunteers are joining crowdsourcing activities for collecting geodata, which might result in higher rates of man-made mistakes in open map projects such as OpenStreetMap. While there are some methods for monitoring the accuracy and consistency of the created data, there is still a lack of advanced systems to automatically discover misplaced objects on the map. One feature type which is contributed daily to OSM is Point of Interest (POI). In order to understand how likely it is that a newly added POI represents a genuine real-world feature scientific means to calculate a probability of such a POI existing at that specific position is needed. This paper reports on a new analytic tool which dives into OSM data and finds co-existence patterns between one specific POI and its surrounding objects such as roads, parks and buildings. The platform uses a distance-based classification technique to find relationships among objects and tries to identify the high-frequency association patterns among each category of objects. Using such method, for each newly added POI, a probabilistic score would be generated, and the low scored POIs can be highlighted for editors for a manual check. The same scoring method can be used for existing registered POIs to check if they are located correctly. For a sample study, this paper reports on the evaluation of 800 pre-registered ATMs in Paris with associated scores to understand how outliers and fake entries could be detected automatically. Abstract

The IMPACTS project investigated how impurities affect the design and operation of CO2 transport and storage processes. Experimental work and modelling have advanced the state of the art in the areas of how impurities in CO2 affect thermo-physical properties, fluid flow, corrosion, and reservoir chemical reactivity. High-quality experimental thermodynamic data were obtained to develop new reference equations of state for exhaust gases (EOS-CG). Parts of the results have been distributed as the publicly available TREND 2.0 software. The software enables modelling the true behaviour of impure CO2 mixtures, thereby increasing the fidelity of the simulations. IMPACTS also provided recommendations that relate results from parts of the CCS chain into results that relate to the entire CCS chain. They cover such areas as trade-offs between impurity levels and CCS system costs, optimized CO2 quality on a case-by-case basis for CCS chains, and design/operation of pipelines. New methodologies have been suggested for selecting the design criteria for operation of CO2 pipelines to avoid two-phase flow and running ductile fractures. This can help limit over-specifying design and reduce costs. For example, IMPACTS has shown how 4% of impurities in the CO2 can increase the power consumption for compression and processing by 50%. IMPACTS has generated a large amount of new knowledge and is an example of how a wide-reaching research program with several groups investigating different aspects of the same topic has brought the knowledge base forward while ensuring that the results are aligned. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

In this study we probe the ultimate potential Underground Gas Storage (UGS) capacity of the Netherlands by carrying out a detailed feasibility study on inflow performances of all onshore natural gas reservoirs. The Netherlands is one of the largest natural gas producers in Western Europe. The current decline of its national production and looming production restrictions on its largest field of Groningen -owing to its induced seismicity- have recently made necessary to upgrade the two largest UGS of Norg and Grijpskerk. The joined working volume of these two UGS is expected to replace the swing capacity of the Groningen field to continue guaranteeing the security of supply of low calorific natural gas. The question is whether this UGS configuration will provide the expected working storage capacity unrestricted by issues on reservoir performances and/or induced seismicity. This matter will be of paramount importance in the near future when production restrictions and/or the advance state of depletion of the Groningen field will turn the Netherlands into a net importer of high calorific natural gas. By then, the question will be whether the available UGSs will still be economically attractive to continue operating, or if additional or alternative UGSs will be needed?. Hence the characterization and ranking of the best potential reservoirs available today is of paramount importance for future UGS developments. We built an in-house automated module based on the application of the traditional inflow performance relationship analysis to screen the performances of natural gas reservoirs in onshore Netherlands. Results enable identifying the 72 best candidates with an ultimate total working volume capacity of 122±30 billion Sm 3 . A detailed sensitivity analysis shows the impact of variations in the reservoir properties or wellbore/tubing configurations on withdrawal performances and storage capacity. We validate our predictions by comparing them to performances of the UGSs currently operating in the Netherlands. Our results show that although Norg and Grijpskerk stand midst the best candidates, their working:cushion gas volume (wv:cv) ratios appear amongst the lowest. We found many other reservoir candidates with higher wv:cv ratios ("1) and working volumes between 3 and 10 billion Sm 3 geographically distributed across the Netherlands. Any of the current and future UGSs will have to compete with economically more attractive means of gas import via pipelines and liquefied natural gas. We suggest that only the strategic development of a network of efficient underground gas storages with wv:cv ratios "1, could increase its economical attractiveness. This can reduce future dependence on foreign gas supply for cases of import disruption or shortages during peak demand in winter periods. Future political and economic decisions and societal acceptance will determine the role that UGS will play in the security of supply of natural gas in the Netherlands and Western Europe.

Abstract

Decision Support System (DSS) has been developed to evaluate the technical and economical feasibility of CO2 storage in the subsurface. The DSS performs a detailed, stochastic analysis of the technical and economical aspects of a CCS project, which consists of any number of CO2 sources and sinks plus the connecting pipeline network. The DSS uses the database of CO2 emission points and storage locations in Europe that has been compiled in the EU Geocapacity project. The system is a combination of an internet application, which visualises the database and allows the user to select sources and sinks and create a pipeline network, and an application to be run on a local computer, which performs a stochastic analysis of the costs of a CO2 capture, transport and storage system. The DSS provides not only an estimate of the total CCS cost, but also an analysis of the elements in the CCS chain (capture, compression, transport and storage), enabling a feasibility analysis on several levels. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

This research is a legal analysis concerning four scenarios for cross-border carbon dioxide (CO2) transport that could increase the deployment of carbon-capture and storage (CCS) deployment in Europe. The legal analysis categorizes the law into three levels-international, national and local-and considers the four scenarios in light of these three levels of energy law. Upon reviewing the four scenarios, it is clear that the Rotterdam Nucleus (referred to as the 'Pilot Case') is the leading scenario and as a result it is explored in more detail. The potential Pilot Case is based on the development of Rotterdam (in the Netherlands) as a southern North Sea hub. Under this Rotterdam Nucleus scenario, captured CO2 will be transported through the Port of Rotterdam to depleted gas fields offshore the Netherlands. CO2 will also be transported through further links using CCS infrastructure to facilitate the processing of undeveloped gas fields offshore UK. The Pilot case contemplates further expansion opportunities, increasing the capture clusters through additional pipelines, expanding to further gas fields and using the port of Rotterdam for CO2 shipping-hence the analysis of the other scenarios may be invaluable in the future development of CO2 networks in the EU. Finally, and an original contribution of this article is that it employs the three lawyers of energy law theoretical framework to an energy problem that was examined by an interdisciplinary research team. Furthermore, this research was developed further through two key industry stakeholder meetings with CCS experts in the EU. © The Author(s) 2018. Abstract

n innovative risk analysis model has been developed in order to quantify and analyse safety risks related to loss-of- containment scenarios in the pipeline transport of CO2. The risk model integrates the identified failure modes, consequence estimates and emergency response, producing consistent risk profiles based on complete outcome spaces and for different system design choices. The method involves integration in a Bayesian Belief Network (BN) of analytical equations for gas dispersion combined with statistics and expert estimates of particularly uncertain variables. Future failure initiators, scenarios and impacts are captured in a graphical structure which represents and calculates the effects of common causes. The test case for the integrated risk model will be a large CO2 capture and transport network at the Le Havre industrial zone with export to Rotterdam. The primary relative advantages of the BN risk model approach are discussed.
