Safety is a key strategic management concern for safety-critical industries and management needs new, more efficient tools and methods for more effective management routines. Abstract

Part 1: Autonomic and Decentralized Management International audience Energy efficiency has become a major research topic in the Internet community as a result of unprecedented rise in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. One typical approach towards energy efficiency is to select a subset of IP routers or interfaces that will go to sleep mode during the off-peak period. However, on-the-fly network reconfiguration is generally deemed harmful especially to real time packets due to routing re-convergence. In this paper, we develop an efficient algorithm for achieving energy efficiency which is disruption free. The objective is to incrementally wake up sleeping links upon the detection of increased traffic demand. Unlike normal approaches of manipulating link weights or reverting to full topology in case of even minor network congestion and thereby sacrificing energy savings, our algorithm wakes up the minimum number of sleeping links to the network in order to handle this dynamicity. The performance of our algorithm was evaluated using the GEANT network topology and its traffic traces over a period of one week. According to our simulation results, up to almost 47% energy gains can be achieved without any obstruction to the network performance. Secondly, we show that the activation of a small number of sleeping links is still sufficient to cope with the observed traffic surge. Document type: Part of book or chapter of book

Part 6: Quality through Routing, Naming and Control; International audience; The evolution of various wireless technologies has greatly increased the interest in heterogeneous networks, in which the mobile users can enjoy services while roaming between different networks. The current Internet architecture does not seem to cope with the modern networking trends and the growing application demands for performance, stability and efficiency, as the integration of different technologies faces many problems. In this paper, we focus on the issues raised when attempting to provide seamless mobility over a hybrid environment. We highlight the shortcomings of the current architecture, discuss some of the proposed solutions and try to identify the key choices that lead to failure. Finally, we introduce RINA (Recursive Inter-Network Architecture), a newly-proposed network architecture that achieves to integrate networks of different characteristics inherently and show a simple example that demonstrates this feature. Part 3: - WCNS 2011 Workshop; International audience; Collaborative Intrusion Detection Networks (CIDN) are usually composed by a set of nodes working together to detect distributed intrusions that cannot be easily recognized with traditional intrusion detection architectures. In this approach every node could potentially collaborate to provide its vision of the system and report the alarms being detected at the network, service and/or application levels. This approach includes considering mobile nodes that will be entering and leaving the network in an ad hoc manner. However, for this alert information to be useful in the context of CIDN networks, certain trust and reputation mechanisms determining the credibility of a particular mobile node, and the alerts it provides, are needed. This is the main objective of this paper, where an inter-domain trust and reputation model, together with an architecture for inter-domain collaboration, are presented with the main aim of improving the detection accuracy in CIDN systems while users move from one security domain to another. Abstract

In this report, we study the problem of optimizing the throughput of applications for heterogeneous platforms subject to failures. The considered applications are composed of a sequence of consecutive tasks linked as a linear graph (pipeline), with a type associated to each task. The challenge is to specialize the machines of a target platform to process only one task type, given that every machine is able to process all the types before being specialized, to avoid costly context or setup changes. Each instance can thus be performed by any machine specialized in its type and the workload of the system can be shared among a set of specialized machines. For identical machines, we prove that an optimal solution can be computed in polynomial time. However, the problem becomes NP-hard when two machines can compute the same task type at different speeds. Several polynomial time heuristics are presented for the most realistic specialized settings. Experimental results show that the best heuristics obtain a good throughput, much better than the throughput obtained with a random mapping, and close to the optimal throughput in the particular cases on which the optimal throughput can be computed.; Dans ce rapport, nous étudions le problème de l'optimisation du débit d'applications de type pipeline dans un environnement hétérogène sujet à des pannes. Les applications sont constituées d'un ensemble de tâches consécu\\-tives typées et organisées selon une chaîne linéaire ou pipeline. Le but est ici de spécialiser les machines de la plate-forme d'exécution afin qu'elles ne traitent qu'un seul type de tâches, sachant qu'au départ elles peuvent exécuter tous les types. Cela permet d'éviter des reconfigurations coûteuses entre tâches de types différents sur une même machine. Ainsi, les instances d'une même tâche peuvent être distribuées sur plusieurs machines spécialisées pour le type de cette tâche, ce qui permet une répartition de la charge du système sur un ensemble de machines spécialisées. Lorsque la plate-forme est composée de machines identiques, nous prouvons qu'une solution optimale peut être trouvée en temps polynomial. Par contre, le problème devient NP-complet dès lors que deux machines peuvent traiter une même tâche à des vitesses différentes. Ce faisant, plusieurs heuristiques sont présentées dans le cas le plus réaliste d'un système spécialisé. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que les meilleures heuristiques obtiennent de bons résultats en terme de débit, meilleurs qu'avec une allocation aléatoire, et que les débits atteints sont très proches des débits optimaux dans les cas particuliers pour lesquels une solution optimale peut être calculée. International audience; The temporal evolution of mobile processes is governed by independently operating local clocks and their migration timeouts. We define a formalism modelling such distributed systems allowing (maximal) parallel execution at each location. Taking into account explicit timing constraints based on migration and interprocess communication, we introduce and study a number of timed behavioural equivalences, aiming to provide theoretical underpinnings of verification methods. Interoperability in logistics is a prerequisite for realizing data pipelines and the Physical Internet. Forecasting data, real time data, and actual positions of shipments, containers, and transport means shared via events have to be harmonized and are expected to improve all types of processes, support synchromodal planning, and improve risk analysis from a compliance and resilience perspective. Technically, several solutions are implemented by organizations and innovations have been validated in so-called Living Labs or demonstrators in various projects. These solutions do not yet provide open systems required for a (global) data pipeline. A federation of solutions is required to construct data pipelines and to support sustainable development of applications on smart devices allowing Small and Medium sized Enterprises to collaborate. This paper proposes a set of platform services and so-called platform protocols to allow interoperability of different platforms for constructing a data pipeline. The proposed services and protocols further extend existing interoperability solutions and services for supply and logistics. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2015. Part 1: Traffic Engineering and Quality-of-Service; International audience; In current network infrastructures, several management tasks often require significant human intervention and can be of high complexity, having to consider several inputs to attain efficient configurations. In this perspective, this work presents an optimization framework able to automatically provide network administrators with efficient and robust routing configurations. The proposed optimization tool resorts to techniques from the field of Evolutionary Computation, where Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are used as optimization engines to solve the envisaged NP-hard problems. The devised methods focus on versatile and resilient aware Traffic Engineering (TE) approaches, which are integrated into an autonomous optimization framework able to assist network administrators. Some examples of the supported TE optimization methods are presented, including preventive, reactive and multi-topology solutions, taking advantage of the EAs optimization capabilities. International audience; The experimental evaluation of wireless and mobile networks is a challenge that rarely substitutes simulation in research works. This statement is even more evident in vehicular communications, due to the equipment and effort needed to obtain significant and realistic results. In this paper, key issues in vehicular experimental evaluation are analyzed by an evaluation tool called AnaVANET, especially designed for assessing the performance of vehicular networks. This software processes the output of well-known testing tools such as ping or iperf, together with navigation information, to generate geo-aware performance figures of merit both in numeric and graphical forms. Its main analysis capabilities are used to validate the good performance in terms of delay, packet delivery ratio and throughput of NEMO, when using a road-side segment based on IPv6 GeoNetworking. Part 4: Energy Efficiency International audience We study the Stochastic Traffic Engineering (STE) problem arising from the support of QoS-demanding live (e.g., real time) audio/video applications over unreliable IP-over-wireless access pipes. First, we recast the problem to be tackled in the form of a suitable nonlinear stochastic optimization problem, and then we develop a goodput analysis for the resulting IP-over-wireless pipe that points out the relative effects of fading-induced errors and congestion-induced packet’s losses. Second, we present an optimal resource-management policy that allows a joint scheduling of playin, transmit and playout rates. Salient features of the developed joint scheduling policy are that: i) it is self-adaptive; and, ii) it is able to implement reliable Constant Bit Rate (CBR) connections on the top of unreliable energy-limited wireless pipes.
